Christmas letter from Dad's wife. A little irritated.

Am I being too sensitive?

The letter came with a card that was a professional picture of her cat.

Most of you already know my beloved husband, Joe Jones, passed away two days after Christmas last year! It was very sudden, on December 27th, 2015, we were watching a football game! Joe died doing what he enjoyed doing best! He did not suffer one minute! As you all know, Joe was a wonderful, honest, and caring person! This is how he wanted to die, fast and without any pain! He didn't want to be a burden on anyone!

Three days after Joe's passing I adopted Kitty from the humane society! Joe was not fond of Cats, and I respected his wishes not to have one, but I told him, if he went before me, I was going to adopt a cat the next day! Well it took me three days!

Then she signs it from herself and the cat.

Exclamation marks that her husband died and she replaced him with a cat?

BTW, my dad was a big softie and he didn't hate cats, he just didn't want pets anymore.

It's an odd letter for sure. How old is she?

She's normally very Martha Stewart, Erma Bomback. She can be tacky though. Did I tell you guys last year she gave me my Christmas gift back, a pandora charm, because she had that one? And then she gave my DD fuzzy socks that my sister had just given her for Christmas a few days before that?

Odd, but she may trying to keep it light and amusing so not to be sending a depressing letter out near Christmas. I would take it personally though if it were my father.

I texted my sister a few days ago to ask her what she thought of the letter and she replied " you mean the one where she replaced her dead husband with a cat?" Haven't asked other sister yet because she's been a bit cray cray lately.

The exclamation points are odd and I think the cat stuff is meant to be funny.

...My husband and I have a similar conversations about cats. Not sure if I'd actually go get one that soon.

My MIL is already planning to get 2 cats. It's a thing. But, the card is weird. Beyond weird. And actually hurtful to the family, I think.

Yeah, I can see where she might think it's a cute anecdote- her first Christmas without him. But it doesn't come off that way. Especially since she's also talking about someone's father.

I think it shows that she was scared of being alone; but
it also shows that she is very insensitive to those who
also lost a father. Has she always been this crude?

It's tacky and thoughtless. But it sounds as though this is not new behavior.

Count your blessings that you will never have to deal with her again.

Yep crude. Handed me back the charm I gave her when we were at the funeral home planning my dad's funeral. Then she was excited when the funeral director told her she would start getting his SS payment since his was higher than hers.

Well, I was giving her the benefit of the doubt in my last post.  Taken back.  The woman is insane.

That is really weird and insensitive.

She should consider using normal punctuation, too. The exclamation points make it worse.

I'm going with she was trying to keep it light & not sound like a depressed widow. She did open with what a wonderful man he was & that he died doing what he loved. I think she is trying to be chin up on her first Christmas without him & the anniversary of his death. I don't see it as replacing her deceased husband with a cat but instead filling an emptiness in her home & having something to love.

And as an aside I give her points for adopting from the Humane Society instead of buying from a breeder.

I see the whole returning of gifts & regifting the fuzzy socks a totally different issue. It was tacky & clumsy but she may not have been in her right mind with grief at the time. Or she may be tacky & clumsy in general IDK. Because while I do give her letter a pass it is a clumsy attempt at what she was trying to portray. I am sorry it hurt you. I am sure that was not her intent.

Sometimes the best response possible is to not say anything at all, and to let the crazy hang there in the air for the world to see. If you let it hang there long enough, they start to see it themselves and wind up becoming embarrassed at how crazy they were.

I talked to my brother. He said he didn't get a picture of the cat or a Christmas letter. She gave him cash. Twice the amount of the gift card I got. But that's okay, they are closer since he lives in the same city.

Well, at this age, it really does make better sense to chalk some of this up to the brain not firing on all cylinders. Just hope and pray you dont go down the rabbit hole so efficiently when you are that age. hahahaha!
