Boring but necessary. Mine for my townhome/condo is coming due in early February and I've never been happy with Safeco. Last February the price, including earthquake insurance (which you need to carry in CA or you're a fool) was getting exorbitant.
Is anyone happy with theirs and had good experiences with claims? I don't have anything to claim but that aspect is pretty darned important.
I have Nationwide, one of the few that would write a 1912 600 sq ft house. The take my money each year, no claims.
I hate the CEA (earthquake) every year I pay they insist I have to pay the installment fee even though I pay in full. A year later I get a check, too small to cash which goes unclaimed to the state.
I have State Farm, and yes, they cost a bit more, but I'm not going to complain. They replaced 2 roofs for me this year without a hassle. Also - their car insurance rates were lower which offset the higher HOI cost. And if you have an alarm system, you get a 20% discount.

There are no checks too small to cash. Just deposit it.

Amica if you can get it in CA. I made a claim with them due to a fallen tree and they were quick and courteous. Unlike Geico you tried their damnedest to not pay for a kitchen fire.

I had State Farm when I had my house. I never had to make a claim, but I thought my rates were reasonable and their customer service was always great. One time my bank got my account number switched with another mortgage that was in the foreclosure process, because of this, they didn't pay my insurance out of escrow. My local State Farm agent called me because they hadn't received my payment. That's how I found out the bank was about to mistakenly foreclose on my house.
