I have cancelled all of our plans. We will likely still go out to dinner tomorrow for my birthday, but we are not up for partying. My FIL's birthday is the 1st, and we don't know how that's going to hit us come midnight since we are usually celebrating with him.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
I don't go out NYE, too scared of the drunks on the road. NY day I am doing a hike with my hiking club near the ocean and then brunch.
I haven't gone out on NYE since a teen when a friend was killed in a drunk driving accident. On occasion I have walked to neighbor's parties or such but mostly go to bed early and do planed activities the next day. DS and I used to go skiing every New Year's day, after DD was born we used to go away to the mountains for NY weekend, but she is with her father this weekend.

That reminds me - I have to figure out where to get ballet shoes. They said you can also wear cotton socks for the beginners, but I WANT SHOES! If I'm going to be a 'dancer' I should look like one!

Aaaah ha ha ha! The Payless reviews give these shoes low rating because 'they're not useful for serious dancers'. If you're a serious dancer are you really getting your dance shoes from Payless?!

I agree with chef, The first holidays without a loved one is hard. Doing something or giving to one of his favorite charity in his honor may help.

We are usually low key for NYE. When DSS was younger and living at home, we would go to the movies, pick up Chinese and have a picnic onthe living room floor while waiting for the NYC Ball to drop with Dick Clark. We went out for a few years after we moved here but it just is not us.
This year, we have appetizers, will watch a movie and watch NYC Ball drop. Tomorrow we will watch the Mummer Parade while cleaning the rest of the house.
And Jesse has to be at work early tomorrow morning.
So we are just watching TV and I'll probably be in bed by 9.
Which is fine with me.

Don't know how many will come over to watch with us.
Got lots of hors d'oeuvres, and plenty of beverages, so
we're good to go. All local driving - not much exposure
to the crazies.
Which has stopped the individual fireworks that were going on all day.

We have had dinner at the same Thai restaurant in town for 10 or 11 years. The staff remembers us and sends us over some dessert now. Fun memories!
We recorded the ball dropping so the boys could see it. Our town holds a "first night" celebration and we can see the fireworks from our bedroom window. They do a nice job.
