GOP Rep Pushes Repeal of Gun-Free School Zones Act Under Trump
Permalink

Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY-4) is pushing a repeal of the Gun-Free School Zone Act (GFSZA) in hopes that it may finally be done away with under President Donald Trump.

Efforts to repeal the act were originally undertaken by former Congressman Ron Paul. Massie’s push marks the third attempt to repeal the law.

Under the auspices of the GFSZA, public school mass shootings have been plentiful. The act was passed in 1990 and signed by President George H. W. Bush. In its wake a horrified nation has witnessed Columbine (April 20, 1999), Santana High School (March 5, 2001), Rocori High School (September 24, 2003), Red Lake Senior High School (March 21, 2005), Platte Canyon High School (September 27, 2006), Sandy Hook (December 14, 2012), Sparks Middle School (March 21, 2013), Arapahoe High School (December 13, 2013), and many others.

In fact, ABC News reports that 141 students were “killed in a mass murder or attempted mass murder at a school since Columbine” alone.

In light of the myriad slaughters of unarmed innocents, Representative Massie seeks to remove any federal barrier to teachers and staff being armed for defense of themselves and their students. Massie’s bill H.R. 34 is named the Safe Students Act.

Massie’s office put out a press release in which he observed, “Gun-free school zones are ineffective. They make people less safe by inviting criminals into target-rich, no-risk environments. Gun-free zones prevent law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves, and create vulnerable populations that are targeted by criminals.”

The Safe Students Act is backed by the NRA, Gun Owners of America, and the National Association for Gun Rights.

I think there should be adults in every school who have guns. It wouldn't be that hard to train them.

In the regions where guns are frowned upon it will be difficult to find someone willing to take on the responsibility.

It should still be an option.

Well it doesn't seem to be working to begin with. A couple of months ago our school district had 7 loaded guns taken from students. Thank goodness someone told on them.

The parents excuses were always "It's not his fault, student forgot he put a loaded gun in his backpack."

Why would student even put a loaded gun in his backpack to begin with?

Obviously the students should be searched for guns if that's an isssue but I hope this goes through.

I think it's obvious that gun free means come and get me to psychos.

Why would a gun be in a back pack?

The student had been camping, hiking, or working.

How would the school handle a conceal carry permit held by a student?

In the late 80s, it was common for students to have riffles, shot guns, handguns, in their vehicle on campus.

There were still shooting clubs in some schools.

I would absolutely support adults carrying on campus.

A friend of mine had a gun rack on his truck, with rifles on it in high school. I never even gave it a second thought at the time.

Just about everyone had some kind of gun in their car back then.

And that is because that was the norm in that day and time.  Unfortunately it is no longer so in the areas that frown on guns, it will be hard to find some employee already in the school to take on the responsibility.  A security guard will have to be hired in those communities, not a bad thing for safety, bad for taxes.

I think every school should put out a sign saying all staff are trained and encouraged to carry.

Gun control is part of this whole attempt to emasculate men and weaken the country.

have never considered gun control as an effort to emasculate men--interesting--have always seen gun control as an effort to limit FREEDOM--by disarming the populace, the regime has removed the only serious threat to themselves and their policies

That, too. But I think it's all connected somehow.

Back when I was in High School, it would have taken less time to count the number of vehicles WITHOUT a shotgun or rifle in the window or on the back seat. And that's including faculty and students.

I don't understand the thought process of people that think limiting the law abiding citizens from protecting themselves prevents criminals from breaking the law. Criminals don't care about the law. Make up a thousand laws if you like, they just simply don't care about them, because they feel that they don't apply to them.

It's all about making people dependent on the government.
