Unclogging a drain . . .

The bathroom sink drain in the apartment is clogged. I've used numerous things like Drano or Liquid Plumber and Liquid Plumber for hair clogs to unclog it. It works for a short time but continues to block. I think the owner of the building must've washed out brushes used with adhesive, caulk, etc because nothing seems to work permanently. The toilet in the apartment is has a consistent ring around the water level due to the same thing. I've taken a brillo pad to the toilet trying to get the adhesive (or whatever it is) off but to no avail.

Anyway, is there a home remedy I can use to unclog the sink rather than spending $10 once a month to get it clear? I'm about ready to take the S trap apart and see or replace it.

Thanks

Undo the u bend and clean that sucker out. You may have to replace it, but the parts aren't too expensive. Be sure to use plumbing compound and/or tape and keep a bucket underneath for a couple days to be sure it is sealed correctly.
Also make sure to check the pipe directly under the drain and clean that out too. Wear gloves and possibly a face mask as there can be very unpleasant odors.
Good luck.

Snake it. The chemicals such as liguid plumber are horrible for the pipes.

Baking soda and vinegar.

Get one of those long snake things. That usually works well.

Those are only a couple dollars. You can get them at Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, etc.

Snake. I use mine for my shower a few times a year, whether it needs it or not. And boy, the hair turds that come up....

Let it drain as much as possible. Pour in 1/2 cup baking
soda, followed by 1 cup vinegar mixed with 2 cups
boiling water. It will foam up, but will not harm any of
the pipes.

Oh first time I clean my shower drain I thought I had pulled up a rat!  I was gagging.  Gotten used to it now and do the cleaning out once a month and it is no longer a problem.  But gag city when it hasn't been done in years!

Wow! Thanks everyone! This has been really helpful. Next time I'm out I'll grab one of those snakes. In the meantime, I'll try the baking soda and vinegar.

*runs to the pantry to grab supplies*

Please do the merging of the vinegar and baking soda at the locale of the drain. I made the mistake of mixing it in the kitchen and then thinking I would pour it down the drain upstairs. disbelief

I got used to it at an early age.  My father would snake it and call me in to show it to me, since it was all my long hair.  As if I could do anything about it.  LOL  My mom & I still joke about it.

there is a commercial plumbing product called " Thrift " sold at plumbing supply stores around here--you'll have to sign a couple or three EPA releases when you purchase the product

have never found/used anything that works as thoroughly or quickly as it does--wear rubber gloves and eye protection when using--activated by hot water only--is awesome

We used something we bought at lowes that was sealed in plastic, as soon as my husband dumped it down the drain a poof of green vapors shot up and dh,dog and I had to leave the house for a couple of hours. The good news is it unclogged the drain, the bad news it took of the shine off the aluminum sink so we had to buy a new one.

Ex DH used something that made the house smell like rotten eggs. I called my fireman friend and he said to light a candle in the other end of the house. Sure enough, it got rid of the smell.

I won't dump chemicals into my plumbing, you are only creating an expensive fix to the pipes down the road.

And if you have a septic system, you have to be
extra careful of what you use. The baking soda/
vinegar/hot water is safe for septic systems.
