But after keeping up with my meals for a few weeks, I get between 1,000 and 1,400 a day.

It depends on your height and weight. But if you go too low, generally 1200 and lower, your body will "panic" and think it's starving and hold onto the fat. DG has said on many occasions she is very short so she can get away with going lower. The taller you are the more you will require.
I'm currently following a 1500 and have dropped 16 pounds.

Height is a big factor. My BIL and I use the same app to track calories. I said I get 1200/day and he goes, really, wow, it says I should have over 2000. I soda and you're also a foot and half taller than me!
My height, etc. says 1600-ish for weight maintenance and 1200 for loss. I've been sticking pretty close to 1200 every day for just about 6 months and have lost just over 30lb. There were a few bouncy weeks in there, but nothing major. I think I'm 5-ish away from goal weight. Adding the ballet class has expedited the loss, and I get more caloric 'points'. My app also tracks exercise throughout the day and will add calories for the amount of movement. (did you know that 10,000 steps is only worth about 150cal?)
You set it up with all the questions and then set up your goals. There is an option to pay for more features, but I have yet to find a reason to do it. I guess if I was doing something with proteins or fats or something I would want more filters, but it works just good.
It also has a pretty full database of foods that are common, and if it's not there you can scan the barcode right into the app and it will put it on your list. AND, if you use recipes consistently it will transfer all that data as well. You can manipulate portion sizes, etc.
It's also linked to a step counter that is apparently on my iphone (who knew?) and will add calories as it counts energy put-out. I really like it.

Not sure how many I'm supposed to, and not sure how many I actually do. I used to keep track of calories to lose weight, but the last few years I've found I do better counting WW points using the old system.

I use myfitnesspal too. It's really easy to use. When I remember and I'm not embarrassed to see how many calories I've eaten

Men get more too because they have a higher muscle to fat ratio than women. Women have more fat than men to nourish babies they carry. At least that's how our bodies were designed.

I've faithfully used MyFitnessPal daily for exactly 1404 days. I lost most of my weight the first 2 years, maintained for most a year, then I gained 5 pounds that I could not lose. At the first of the year, I changed up my work out routine and have lost 1 pound a week. I'm finally rid of those evil 5 pounds. I'd like to lose 5 more for an even 50 pounds.
According to my BMI, I should lose 20 more pounds. If I were to lose the 20 pounds, my weight would be the same as when I was about 14 yrs old. My dr say absolutely not. She said a loss of that much would be unhealthy for my frame.
My BMI says I should lose 20 more too. They I used a modify version that just put it on a spectrum that showed me in the healthy range and then rated my risk of health issues based on weight and suggested how it would be if I was using movement.
For anyone on medicine that must maintain a constant blood level, be aware that weight loss can cause problems. I found out the hard way. I started having dizzy spells that grew progressively worse until it reached the point that it was no longer safe for me to drive. Coincidentally, I had an appointment with my neurologist. When he checked my blood levels, he had a minor freak out. With my weight loss, I was basically taking 100 mg per day more meds than I needed. It had reached toxic levels in my system.

Where did you find a modified version? I'd love to try it.
When I lost 80 pounds, my doctor had to change my meds.

I used to count carbs, for Wayne, back in the day.
I don't even do that, anymore.
I feel like such a lazy person.
You guys rock...for keeping track of this.
Shame on me.
(I used to pay more attention to this stuff. Since Chris died, I haven't bothered to so much as step on a scale. I figure that if my clothes still fit, I can't be too far off of where I should be.)
When I started keeping up with it, I thought I'd be way up there.
I felt like I was eating too much.
But I was noticing that I wasn't hitting 1,300 a day.
Most of the time it was lower, a lot lower.
So I tried eating 3 solid meals a day.
Still wasn't hitting it.
Portion control has been a big key I think.
Back when I was a teen and then a young mom and working, it was nothing for me to eat a whole pizza.
But I realized that was killing me.
I started cutting back.
I wasn't eating cause I was hungry.
Fast forward to about 3 months ago, I started keeping track and realized I wasn't hitting what the "science" said I should.
But my labs were good, except for my iron which has always been low.
My doctor wants me to lose more weight, so do I.
I sleep better, move better, breathe better if I'm not consuming more than 1200 calories a day.

Lol. Your weight being medically not-dangerous and you liking your weight are two different things!
I am trying to keep track of my calories, but it can be difficult.
I'm a bit OCD so counting calories is easy for me.

For you is it kinda on a generic level or is it like all the way down to every last bit of oil and seasoning you put in your mouth? I ask only cuz I sometimes wonder if it makes a difference in the end as to whether a person is religious about it or does it for general yes/no decisions on a meal. On one hand I would assume being ocd particular would offer fab results, but of course I have never tried it so I wouldnt really know for sure one way or another.
I have never counted calories or used one of those apps. I feel that if I did, I would be eating a LOT more calories than you all!! Lol.
Eating such low calorie amounts isn't good for you either. It throws your body into starvation mode and you end up gaining weight.
The average woman should be eating 2000 calories a day to maintain weight or 1500 calories to lose a pound of weight a week. Eating less than that causes weight gain. -- from my BIL who is a registered dietician and nutritionist with both a bachelors and a masters degree in nutrition.

When I used the app it said something like 1593 a day. A really weird number. So I rounded down and use 1500 as a base. I figure if I use a tiny squirt of ketchup then it will be allowed for. I generally don't add "extra's" to my meal but if I use a dab of salad dressing I don't count it and figure it fits into the 93 I rounded down. Whatever I am doing is working. I've lost 18 pounds.

When I started weighing my portions with a food scale I was shocked by how much I had been eating.
Also, once I really grasped how many calories are in a fast food or restaurant meal (even the salads!) it really turned me off from eating anything I don't cook myself.
I guess my point is that it is easier than you might think to consume 2000 or more calories in a day. Or a single meal in a mexican restaurant.

It really is easier than you think. I was checking out the menu before going out to dinner last week. A pasta dish looked good, it had almost 1,500 calories. And that didn't include the salad and bread. And then there is your drink. It can add up fast
I know a person can consume that much without thinking about it.
I'm not knocking anyone for what they eat in any way.
I can't finish my meal a lot of the time.
I eat the bulk of my calories at breakfast.

2000 calories a day is VERY easy. My breakfast was easily 600 calories, and I had a small bagel sandwich and a drink. Yogurt snack was 140. Coffee was about 50 calories w/ cream and sugar. That was almost 800 calories before lunch.

I think people don't realize how quickly the "extras" add up. It's like spending money. How the hell does it add up so quickly? I only spent $10 here and $12 there, etc.
