So, I've said it many times - use credit, not debit. But I use my debit card at the grocery store and usually for lunch. Someone skimmed it somewhere - one of the drive thrus or one of those readers (although aren't the new stupid chips supposed to protect against that?) They are the only ones I hand my card to.
My debit card got compromised. Luckily the bank caught it quickly and I'm only out $150 until the fraud claim goes through. The ONLY reason they caught it so quickly though is b/c they were using it a Kroger in another town while I used it at the Kroger in my town. A transaction went through at 6:14 tonight (fraudulent) at a Kroger in another town. I checked out and used it at about 6:40, and the thieves tried to use it at another Kroger again at 6:45 (that one was declined).
Now, I have no debit card for the rest of the weekend and I have to go to the bank on Monday and get a new temp card.
So much for better security with chip cards.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
A couple of guys were arrested in a reader scam in the tri-state area.

Last NYE I had rented a condo in ski Country, brought DD and her friend. We get to the resort and they didn't have our reservations. I spent a good amount of time on the phone with Hotels.com to straighten it out. The service rep was rude and asked for my CC information and my gut said he is scamming me. but I was trapped 2 hours away from home, snowing, etc. And I gave the info to him. I did get another condo so that was good. but that rep took my CC info and bought a ton of stuff, which my CC company shut down quickly. And the thing is, they won't go after Hotels.com or that rep, and that pisses me off. These CC companies need to actively go after people and then the billions of dollars lost to CC fraud will decrease. I was so mad!
