In protest of school choice advocate Betsy DeVos becoming the next education secretary, some liberals threatened to homeschool their children. Lost on them, apparently, is the irony of that threat.
DeVos, who’s invested in charter and private schools and called for their expansion, is also a big proponent of homeschooling, arguing that it’s “another perfectly valid educational option.”
“We've seen more and more people opt for homeschooling, including in urban areas. What you're seeing is parents who are fed up with their lack of power to do anything about where their kids are assigned to go to school. To the extent that homeschooling puts parents back in charge of their kids' education, more power to them,” she said in a 2013 interview with Philanthropy
My daughter is homeschooling her children because she believes she can do a better job and my dil the same reason. They want to focus more on education and spending more time with them.
I know there are a lot of good public schools but the one here worries more about testing then they do about educating the children.

Lindley,
You are exactly right. Teachers aren't allowed to just TEACH.
I'm not crazy about this appointment. I don't trust this woman. However, it is nice that the liberals get to feel a little bit of the Republican's trepidation over the thought of those they don't agree with being in charge of their kids. Republicans are pretty used to it by now.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

I really know only what I hear on the news (grain of salt) and from you peeps. I am not in the know on education but Trump is pretty thorough vetting his picks so I would like to know what he knows we don't.

If I was starting a kid in school now, I'd homeschool.
There are WAY too many options now, and homeschool kids have to hit the same marks that any other school kid does.
There is no way I'd send a child to public schools now.
My kids have made the same statement at different times.

I hope she gets rid of common core. And she has flip flopped on that issue so I'm not sure. Other than that, I really don't know enough about her to be upset about her appointment.
My only worry is that instead of learning facts and real world usable knowledge, the liberal home-schooled kids will learn how to be special snowflakes that need "safe spaces".
