'I do accept responsibility for what I've done,' Norton said through tears.

She addressed the victims who were present in court, saying: 'What happened to you is absolutely awful.
'From mother to mother, I cannot imagine having to explain what that word means.'
Norton and Torres have three children together. Torres only shed tears when three family members took the stand to describe him as a devoted father, hardworking plumber and volunteer football coach.
Norton, however, spoke to the tearful victims in the packed courthouse.
'The worst decision I've ever made in my life was to not walk away when I had the chance,' Norton said.
One party attendee Hyesha Bryant clutched her chest and told the couple she forgave them, and had 'no hate' in her heart.

She also said: 'I never thought this would be something I'd have to endure in 2017,'
'As adults and parents, we have to instill in our children the values of right and wrong. That moment you had to choose to leave, you stayed.'
Judge McClain noted to the defendants that their actions came less than a month after the fatal shooting of nine black men and women at a historic church in Charleston by 22-year-old Dylann Roof.
Seems like a violation of one of those pesky ammendments.

The confederate flag thing is protected free speech by the 1st amendment. So is calling people the "n" word. However, telling people you are going to kill them is not - that is illegal.

I mean, there are more jails, prisons, and juvenile lock down than schools in America.
I think there needs to be an alternative to this kind of thing.
Maybe a lot of community service, house arrest or limited freedoms.
But that's a ridiculous prison term.
Killers have had less time.

Of course, if the appeal attorney shows the conviction was even partially based on the free speech part, it should be overtu
The guy also pointed a shotgun at the people while making the threats. He had three counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
Well, that's a rather relevant point, isn't it? Changes the whole matter. You'd think that would be important enough information to include in the story, don't you think?

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. --
A Georgia judge sentenced two people to lengthy prison terms for their role in the disruption of a black child's birthday party with Confederate flags, racial slurs and armed threats.
Jose Ismael Torres, 26, will spend 13 years in prison; Kayla Rae Norton, 25, is to serve six years, Atlanta news outlets report.
Both wept as the sentences were handed down Monday in Douglas County, west of Atlanta.
"Their actions were motivated by racial hatred," said Superior Court Judge William McClain.
The judge ordered the two permanently banished from Douglas County once they are released.
The two are the last of 15 people charged in the confrontation at the 8-year-old's party, which took place in Douglasville in July 2015. Only four were charged with felonies. The other two pleaded guilty and are serving shorter prison terms.
Torres and Norton were found guilty of yelling racial slurs and threatening to kill partygoers, even the kids. Prosecutors said Torres pointed a shotgun at the party.
"This is behavior that even supporters of the Confederate battle flag can agree is criminal and shouldn't be allowed," Douglas County District Attorney Brian Fortner said in a statement.
Norton was sentenced on one count of violating Georgia's street gang act and one count of making terroristic threats. Torres was sentenced on three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of terroristic threats and one count of violating the street gang act.
The disruption of the birthday party took place less than a month after white supremacist Dylann Roof killed nine African-Americans at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina. Roof, who was sentenced to death for his crime, brandished the battle flag in several photographs that came to light after his arrest. He said it had been his intent to kill black people and start a race war.

have got to wonder about some people--don't care what color you are, if you came to our kid's(or one of our friend's kid's)birthday party and started threatening people with violence and especially if you had a weapon you'd best have prepared for a long tour in icu or a short trip to the morgue--we would put you down

It's ignorant people like that, that cause the real meaning, history, and heritage of the flag to be forgotten.
To those idiots, I'd just like to say: "Thanks a lot, morons. You just set back the cause of bringing the history of the flag back to reality by a couple of decades. You can't get people to respect the flag by using it to terrorize the very same people you are wanting to teach."
