We occasionally sell used laptops. DH used to be able to bring them home from work when new laptops were issued. He would wipe them clean and it would be set up like a brand new computer with some basic programs.
His advise is to find an independent computer repair shop (not Geek Squad) or a tech savvy friend. Or even a store like Micro Center that deals pretty much only with computers that may have refurbished or open box computers. Micro Center has a website that you can check out what they offer. You may find a new one within your budget.

The battery will be the issue on any used laptop. They don't typically last more than 4 years, if that. Can you set up a desk top and keep that on the floor out of the way and just have a keyboard and monitor on your coffee table or where ever it is you will use it most?

Not sure of what your budget is, but some places like Micro Center have refurbished ones for $199. Keep looking around to see what you can find in your budget. There are even some FB yard sale pages that are for electronics where people sell computers.
