I've long thought about how great it would be to have a charity for single, working parents who make too much for help but not enough to afford insurance.
Like dental procedures or vision.
There are a lot of hard working parents who do everything for their kids, but can't get a cavity filled or buy the new glasses.
What charity would you start?

My plan is to buy a multi family house within walking distance of a college, which we have a lot of here: both the homes and colleges. One or two of the units would be rented to non college students at market rate and on unit to a single parent working and going to college at a much reduced rent. And the local would be a very safe area.

I honestly think that there are far too many scattered little charities. Much more could be done if there were less disparate ones. So I would support one that already existed that I believed in.

That is good on a macro level. I prefer the local level. Work within the community.

I would, and have, volunteered my time. I am on the bone marrow donor list. I donate my clothes to many different charities, saddened by the disillusion they will go to clothe the needy, but rather they sell them to make money. What they use for that money who knows.

I donate all our clothes to local charities. I do that and have to not think about what the recipients do with the clothes.

I used to think they clothed the needy and homeless. Then I learned they just put them in consignment shops and pocket the cash....
Worse than that. The "global" donation boxes take the clothes and sell them to Africa or other countries. SELL the fabric. yeah I don't put the clothes in those units.

I donate unwanted clothing and household items to the local Women in Crisis Shelter. I know for a fact it stays local and IS given to women who are trying to get their lives back on track after abuse, etc.
I would like to start a charity or awareness campaign for Huntington's disease which runs in my family and I'm too scared to test for.
That is scary.
But I think you owe it to yourself to get tested.
I know I'm not your favorite person, but I really do care.
Please, get tested.

The company I work for has many outreach programs for families in crisis, homeless, mentally ill housing, etc. I used to encourage people to donate when they were moving, etc., but the programs wouldn't take the stuff. They would let a socioeconomically disadvantaged family know that there was some 'furniture, clothing and a queen sized bed' waiting at the address of the moving person and the family would have to get a vehicle big enough, get the time off what little work they had and perhaps drive across the city to find it.
Completely inefficient and the stuff never gets donated. I -and a coworker - have been holding a donation for a single youth who is going into independent living following life in foster care but it's been over 3 months of being told that 'we'll figure it out'. It's going to go to another agency. If they want donations they need a significantly better system.
Thanks Vette ... I'm also sorry to hear about your family genetics. I don't see the point in getting tested either. You'll find out if/when it happens. You've already decided not to have bio children, so there is nobody to find out for.
well, we have a few organizations we've supported for years--a couple of them are national the others are state and local entities
if we were to actually start one would be along the general lines of outward bound--introducing young people to the great outdoors, teach them survival skills, how to live in the wilderness off the land, how to fish, hunt, build a shelter, a fire, a log cabin, how to reconnoiter with a map and a compass(not a damned gps unit), how to use a sextant and navigate by the stars, how to find water, dry kindling in the rain, how to live in the mountains, the desert, the swamp in any kind of climate or weather, how to build a raft, a canoe, a glider--how to repair a small engine, drive a boat, fly a small plane/helo, how to track humans and other animals to either capture or evade--and in the process of doing all of these and many others, build in them a sense of independence, of self-reliance, of thinking through a situation/problem and solving it with their own wits and, most of all, instilling in them a sense of our shared responsibility as stewards of this earth for ourselves and those that come after

If I won the lottery and had millions, I would start a non-profit lending company for farmers that want out from under the reign of the big food industry so that they can stop using Monsanto seeds and better afford switching over to organic farming. I would give low interest loans, and for those that go organic, I would have payment abatement during the 3 years it takes to clean their ground, and a graduated loan forgiveness program for every year they are organic after that.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
It's not exactly a charity, but....if the funds were available, I would buy as many of the buildings on Main Street in my little town. And I would give reduced rent to small businesses owned by locals. It seems that we have people who want to open a shop or restaurant (and many have tried), but they have trouble surviving. I think if we could build up the downtown, our little town could become a popular shopping destination. We are quaint and charming, just the type of place you city folks love. The little guys also have a hard time competing against Walmart, if I could, I'd level the playing field.

An awesome idea!
Our state has grants available for this. I have seen it in action - it works! The biggest issue is the 3 year waiting period. The farmers are growing food but cannot tell anyone it's being grown using organic practices and so they have to take conventional pricing for the food that costs a lot more to make. It sucks and the subsidy comes in handy.

I'm afraid lily that if I tested positive I would just kill myself. But that's part of the reason I got fixed too.
If it's coming it's not too far off by now.
Tig that would be a great thing, my sister has always suffered eating disorders.
You aren't a dog. You didn't "get fixed". Words matter. You chose permanent birth control.
That's your only issue with anything in this tree?
Good Lord.

I am supporting her positive self image. I didn't realize that was frowned upon. I want Vette to value herself and speak of herself as a person of worth. Is that wrong?

If you want to talk about yourself as if you are a dog, be my guest. I wanted Vette to know that she deserves to be spoken of with better words. She is worth it. She deserves it. Words matter. The words we use to speak about ourselves give clues to the rest of the world as to how we think we should be treated. Send out bad juju and you will get it back.

I do, however, believe you are trying to find a problem where there is none.
But whatever.

I really don't know how many more charities we need. Simply handing people money does very little to improve their lot in life. I like the "teach a person to fish" kind of charity idea much better. I think it is far better to invest in people as human beings than to simply give them a handout.
I don't think any of us have said we would hand out money.
Everything suggested would benefit more than just one person.

Obviously there would have to be tons of rules or guidelines to helping a homeless person get off the street yet keep it safe for those in the housing.

The problem is, it would need to be almost a police state to make it work.

Yep, basically. Oh and then there are the homeless that dont WANT to be 'on the grid' or accountable. Some that are homeless are exactly where they want to be.
I see situations like the single mom, the out of work father, the guy that was kicked out of his apartment cuz of his dog. Situations where people just need a few months of help to get back on their feet.

Hmm. Interesting question. I think I would like to start one that is focused on the preservation of true history against the onslaught of historical rewrites and whitewashing. That would make it more like a Foundation than a normal charity though, I think.
Barring that, probably a medical research and treatment one.
I watched a special last night that was showing how the trailer park industry is totally making bank as a result of so many people moving to poverty level in the last half dozen years.
Can you imagine having a gazillion dollars to use it to help people at this level of need?
Well, I've lived in a "trailer park" when I was first married.
There are really bad ones and there are really nice ones.
I'd choose a trailer park over an apartment.
That being said, if the residents of said park are hard working and good people, they are usually proud they are providing for their family.
It beats the streets.

Yep. It does beat the streets! What is sad is that for many folks, the trailer park is the last stand. The next is the streets. THAT is the part that hurts my heart.

We have a former neighbor and dear friend who lives in one that is apparently quite beautiful, on a lake. But there seems to be an awful lot more trailer communities than there were when I was growing up. I see that as an indication of a greater need. Or perhaps baby boomers sizing down, who knows.
Well, today's manufactured homes are built pretty good.
Not like back in the 60s and 70s.
A 4 bedroom 3 bath can be less than 100k.
Depending on area, of course.

And the whole smaller home and tiny house movement is taking hold.
I mean, sure 4000 square feet is nice and spacious, but is it necessary?

Lily If I could find the tv show I was watching, I would totally send it to you. It convinced me that the housing market is not where it is at... it is trailer parks is where it is at.
FWM, I only know one person who had that big of a house, I was just giving a nice big number for most "dream houses".
