More Top Execs Fired at Financially Troubled Target Corp.

Over the last few months, retail giant Target Corp. has been desperately cutting costs and canceling long-planned growth programs to regain profitability. As part of its scrambling to finally get into the black, the chain has also been firing top executives, and last week yet another top officer’s scalp was taken.

On Thursday Target announced that chief innovation and strategy officer Casey Carl was leaving the company after 20 years on the job. Casey is at least the fifth top executive to leave the company recently, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Despite firing its top innovation officer, Target CEO Brian Cornell released a statement insisting that “Innovation is alive and well at Target.”

The move might not be a complete shock considering that as its stock price and profits tumbled, early this year the company abruptly canceled two once highly touted innovation and growth projects aimed at bringing Target into the future of retail. Despite these moves, Cornell still claims that “Innovation must be a mind-set, an essential component of every business, every strategy and every team.”

Carl joins a growing list of top officers shown the door at the nationwide retailer. Also fired in the last two years has been Target’s head of stores, head of marketing, its human resources boss, and its chief digital officer.

The scrambling comes after Target suffered three disastrous quarters of sales declines in a row and a loss of over $15 billion this year. The losses came after its April of 2016 announcement that it intended to allow men pretending to be women to use any bathroom or changing room they want to use at any given time.

The announcement sparked millions of people to boycott the company. In one particular case a #BoycottTarget petition organized by the American Family Association has surpassed 1.5 million signatures.

Since April of last year, the company’s brand name has taken a drubbing, and its stock has fallen from a high of $84.14 to $54.78 a share. The fall was bad enough that many investment advisers downgraded Target to a “strong sell” even as its falling price might seem to make it an attractive buy.

This April Target’s CEO was reported as having opposed his own company’s transgender announcement, saying it “frustrated” him that his diversity department made such a fuss over the decision and that they didn’t clear the announcement with him first. Cornell thought the whole situation was mishandled and caused a massive backlash against the company. Insiders say he ultimately backed the policy but felt “stuck” with it.

Target’s focus on transgender rights has prompted it to end the use of single-sex bathrooms and changing rooms. The same trend is underway nationally, where pro-transgender laws are eliminating single-sex facilities and institutions.

In December, a poll showed that only 22.7 percent of respondents endorsed the transgender claim that people should be allowed to change their recorded sex or “gender identity” on government documents whenever they wish. In contrast, 44.6 percent of respondents said people should be allowed to switch their legal sex, but only after first complying with medical or government criteria for male and female characteristics. Twenty-three percent opposed any sex-related change to identity documents, and 17.1 percent declined to answer.

You know the politics of the transgender thing may be a factor, but the truth is, these "budget friendly" dept stores have a relatively short life except in very rural remote ares. And compound that with on line sales compelling lots of retailers to be closing brick and mortar stores, it is just a formula for bankruptcy if the retailers do not align with the new shape of consumer shopping.

True. I can think of umpteen discount stores that have come and gone. Hills, Jamesway, Woolworth, etc. Kmart is taking a big dive. The problem is they build these stores and then let them get cruddy. Then, the shiny new discount store opens and people flock there. Walmart has been good about remodeling their stores and keeping them nicer and they still do great around here. But if they let them deteriorate, people will flock to whomever the newcomer is. They have done several remodels and then built all new Walmarts around here. The Kmart is a disgusting pig sty.

LOL. Hilarious. You were never a Target fan until last year when the rest of us boycotted them.

I don't understand the whole "i am a fan" thing. I shop at Walmart because they have good prices. Do you have Target tshirts and hats and posters in your bedroom? Maybe tattoo it on you to show your fandom!

Our Wal-Marts are nice. I don't go often because on weekends they are crowded. Our Targets are nice, too, but I haven't gone since the whole bathroom thing.

I have never put Target in the "budget friendly" catagory. With the exception of some good sales now and then, they are more expensive then other comparable options.

I shopped there a lot when DD was a toddler, they have a great selection of kids clothes that were not expensive.

And now they carry "Cat and Jack," amazing clothes for kids.

Target in the past was always very clean and 'hip' with their products, but their prices have always been that way as well. In the last few years tho, they have gone the way of neutralism to an extreme. It has become the "Edsel" of stores. "Edsel" failed as a car because it was too vague of a product. It was marketed as a sports car, a family car, a granny car... It tried to be everything to everyone and failed. Target has removed genders from their products, from their marketing, from their bathrooms, and now they are left with a bland presence. Anyone remember Montgomery Ward? They are gone. Why? They lost their brand when they tried to be everything to everyone. Target is doing the same.

Walmart isnt safe from my disdain tho. Walmart is a mile from my home but I hate shopping there. It is supposedly one of the busiest walmarts in the midwest but it is forever low on cashiers. I always spend more time in line than I do shopping. Oh and what is with the grocery isle signs? In the old days, the signs clearly listed a half a dozen things on the sign to tell you what was in the isle. Now they have changed the signs to a few words that are so vague that you dont know if the isle is for cereal or baking stuff.

Why why why why is the crackers in the bread isle instead of near the chip isle? It is a snack for goodness sake! Put it with all the other snacks! I went looking for Mackeral one time, assuming it was in with the tuna. I am staring at the tuna cans and scanning trying to find the mackeral... nothing. I finally asked someone for help and he was like "oh it is by the tuna." I said "um no, I was just there." I kid you not, he then proceeded to bring me to a DIFFERENT tuna area. That's right. THEY HAVE TWO TUNA areas! Who does this?!

Surely a MAN designed these stores and laughs maniacally as he watches women over the security tapes pacing isles 3 and 4 times trying to look for flax seed oil.

Been to target twice in my life.

We don't have one around here, the nearest is 30-45 minutes away, depending on traffic.

I was not impressed either time.

There are 4 Targets within 10 - 12 miles of my house. Depending on which errands I need to run, I will shop at all of them. They are ALL clean and well-organized. The employees are helpful without being pushy. They have expanded their grocery section to include steaks, chicken and pork. Extra lanes are opened if there are more than 3 customers in line.

I have a Target debit card, which saves me 5% when I shop. Their clearance items are great: clean and nicely displayed.

I haven't noticed any "gender removal" in our stores.

So, if THIS = Edsel...I'm a proud "driver."

I haven't stepped into a Target store since the gender thing.

Every one that I used to shop at, has sharply decreased walking traffic. DD said the one closest to us was almost empty the last time she was in the store.

The Omaha stores have a sharp drop off of customers as well. I drive by, see the nearly empty parking lot, and smile.

What I mean about gender removal is a few things. They removed the boys/girls toys sections, the clothes are now more gender neutral style and colors, and then there is the bathroom thing.

They had tons of Easter dresses for girls & suits for boys. Bathrooms here haven't changed. Some already had a "Family Restroom."

Toys...haven't noticed any change there. The Lego aisle has boys and girls' sets.

Much ado about nothing, imo.

Me either, Czech and I have about $200 worth of gift cards that are not going to be used. But I don't see them lasting here for long.  People have more sense than to go into there...

Wow. Give the cards to your women's shelter, maybe? They could buy a LOT of formula & diapers.

It may be the policy that if you pay with a gift card, you get another gift card for any returns. I don't know.

Don't go online!  Then they have to ship it to you and they know you shopped there.  Just go to the store and buy stuff - preferably on clearance with a low profit margin or a loss.

Target sales tanked last year. TANKED. I loved our Target. It was nice, bright, clean. Jojo got a giftcard from there for Christmas so I went in and got her the Trolls movie when it came out. And when I went to check out - they had replaced a bunch of lanes with self-checkout kiosks and no other lanes were open. I hate that with a passion. Even without the bathroom issue, I'd now be shopping there a whole lot less. And I no longer miss it - I do just fine without it and spend less money.

She is very tiny & sometimes has problems flushing.

I wouldn't let my boys go alone until they turned 7, and even so, unless it's a single room bathroom that locks (no stalls), I send them in together, or send DH in with them. Mostly to make sure they aren't messing around.

I let mine go in by themselves once they could go at home without supervision.

They were about 4 or 5.

But I would stand outside the bathroom door waiting for them.

With the boys, I'd get the oldest to open the door and tell me how many were in there, if it was crowded, I took them into the womens.

My brother often took his daughter into the men's room but as soon as she could go by herself, he did the same thing with her I did with my boys.

And yes, I have marched into the men's room when they were taking too long.

It happened once with each.
