Mystery in Virginia: Someone is shaving other people's cats

Associated Press

WAYNESBORO, Va. — Why would someone go around shaving other people's cats?

The mystery has the attention of police in Waynesboro, a small city in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley where someone has been taking cats and precisely shaving their underbellies or legs. It's happened to seven cats since December.

Police Capt. Kelly Walker said Friday that all the cats have been returned otherwise unharmed, but some seem bothered. Walker says all the cats clearly had owners — they were well-groomed and wearing collars. He says police aren't sure what crime has been committed, but the owners "would just like it to stop."

Walker says he learned of the feline barbering spree this week when a resident asked if he could post notices asking anyone with information to contact police.

LOL! I can only imagine, flan.biggrin

But seriously. Cats do not like to be shaved. The Vet would sedate Shop Cat, to shave her matted fur off.

So, I think they need to look for the person, or persons (I've got to believe he/she had a helper) who are scratched up, all to hell!wink

That's how Floyd the barber learned to cut hair.

At least they aren't harming the pets. I guess nowadays that is a surprise when they don't.

Perhaps someone in the neighborhood is sick and tired of other people's cats coming around and causing a ruckus with their dogs?

Im just sayin!

I don't think so, Cheerios.

I think if someone were mad at cats, they would do worse than just shave them.

This smells like teenage pranksters, to me.

Just my best guess.wink

My BFF raised 6 boys. There was a phase where they would give their cat mohawks, and pose her for pictures with cigarettes. It was hilarious.

Is vandalizing a cat, a crime?confuse

If not, should it be?

So many questions.....wink

I agree, that cats were probably scared half to death.

Hopefully, they bounced back okay.

My guess is the cats were well fed, no fleas or ticks. That sort of thing, Vette.

(It sounds like they didn't shave the whole cat. Just legs and tummies. The rest of the fur probably looked good.)

When I first moved to my town, there was a Thumbs up/Down (it's a column in the local paper) where someone wrote a Thumbs down "Whoever took my cat and shaved him should be ashamed".  I laughed at it, it seemed like such a ridiculous prank.  Not laughing at the trauma of the cat though.

Perhaps there is a reason for it?

Maybe the person doing it thinks it helps with all that.

Fleas and ticks like fur to hold onto.

Personally, I think if resources are being used to find whoever is doing this is a waste of money and time.

Surely there is something more pressing for the authorities to concentrate on.

Lily, there is no good reason to snatch a random cat and shave it.

I still think these are pranksters, who maybe did it on a dare.

Goofy buggers!

But, I will say, I'm happy we don't let our cats roam.

They play in our fenced backyard, where they are safe from this sort of thing.smile

I agree with you fwm. I think when they get caught  they should  be  made to work in a animal  shelter.  I don't  think  that  they meant  any harm, but the poor cats were still most likely  scared to death.

I'm sorry, of all the things to worry about, this just gets a chuckle from me.

I don't think it's worth more attention than that.

 He needs it!

Actually, he will be getting a shave down in about 2 weeks.

He likes being shaved.

And this is the shortest he has been shaved, he had a skin infection and the only way to treat it was to almost skin him.

That heart is there naturally.

You just can't see it when he has some growth.

He also has a black patch at his shoulders going down his back to his tail.
