Mystery in Virginia: Someone is shaving other people's cats

WAYNESBORO, Va. — Why would someone go around shaving other people's cats?
The mystery has the attention of police in Waynesboro, a small city in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley where someone has been taking cats and precisely shaving their underbellies or legs. It's happened to seven cats since December.
Police Capt. Kelly Walker said Friday that all the cats have been returned otherwise unharmed, but some seem bothered. Walker says all the cats clearly had owners — they were well-groomed and wearing collars. He says police aren't sure what crime has been committed, but the owners "would just like it to stop."
Walker says he learned of the feline barbering spree this week when a resident asked if he could post notices asking anyone with information to contact police.

When I first moved to my town, there was a Thumbs up/Down (it's a column in the local paper) where someone wrote a Thumbs down "Whoever took my cat and shaved him should be ashamed". I laughed at it, it seemed like such a ridiculous prank. Not laughing at the trauma of the cat though.

I still think these are pranksters, who maybe did it on a dare.

But, I will say, I'm happy we don't let our cats roam.
They play in our fenced backyard, where they are safe from this sort of thing.
I agree with you fwm. I think when they get caught they should be made to work in a animal shelter. I don't think that they meant any harm, but the poor cats were still most likely scared to death.
I'm sorry, of all the things to worry about, this just gets a chuckle from me.
I don't think it's worth more attention than that.

Actually, he will be getting a shave down in about 2 weeks.

And this is the shortest he has been shaved, he had a skin infection and the only way to treat it was to almost skin him.
