When you take care of silk, it will last almost forever!
I have pieces of silk from 1950 that are still supple
and sturdy. Did you know that you can wash pure
silk? Uh huh. Tepid water, Ivory or Dreft soap,
multiple rinses, roll it up in a clean white towel until
most of the water is wicked out, then iron it with a
medium iron. It will come out as crisp as if you had
starched it!
I was the only girl in my class who wore silk dresses
to school (back in the 40's and 50's ). My mother
would take sample "blankets" from the silk manufactured
by my father for ties, and make the most elegant and
comfortable dresses for me "Blankets" would come in
several colors with the same design. So I could have the
same dress in 4 or 5 different colors!
Speaking of silk ties, here's a hint from my father:
If you are looking to purchase a tie, hold it up by the
narrow end. If the wide end turns more than one-
quarter, it has not been cut on the true bias, and it
will not lie flat on the shirt, and the knot will always
be off kilter.
about silk ties as well--if you're going to buy a real one, known as foulard silk, be sure to look at the " backing " also known as the " ticking "--should be cotton(or preferrably linen)and have the feel of a soft tablecloth--should also be about 1.5 to 3.0 inches wide(depending on the width of the tie)--should also have a small thumbnail tag near the narrow end--the " tail " that says " 100% silk "--there are four basic styles: solid, ivy league, rep(for repeating stripe)and paisley--if you're going to buy a tie for a man as a gift, buy a solid--medium to dark red is a staple as are pale shades of blue--soft yellow or gold work as well--there are few gifts you can buy for a man(if he wears ties)as elegant and beautiful as a solid foulard silk tie--love them
