Drummer salesman. 19th century door to door selling from horse drawn carriage. When trains came in, they were still called drummers and traveled from small town to small town. Willie Loman in "Death of a Salesman" and the drummer in the musical "The Music Man" helped keep the term alive for a while.
"Drum up business" also comes from this era. The salesman carried a square or rectangular suitcase with his wares and would beat on it with sticks when he was approaching the house. Thus drumming up business....
