“Is that all?”

That’s what the mom said after she asked my daughter what activities she participated in after school.

My daughter gave her the list of activities, and the mom looked at me dumbfounded and said, “Is that all?”

Well, yes, that was all, and it was a thoughtful list of activities that my daughter enjoyed, but that question completely shook my confidence. I struggled to come up with a simple response that would adequately describe our parenting philosophy without stuttering out a whole big thing or sounding defensive.

My daughter had no such qualms, she truthfully replied for me by saying, “Yes, the rest of the time I like to relax and do nothing.”

You go, girl.

That ended the conversation, but my confidence in my parenting choices was rattled, and that night I needed my husband to talk me down off the ledge of parental guilt and remorse for limiting my daughter’s opportunities and thus ruining her chances at a successful life.

Do you struggle with deciding how many and which activities your kids will participate in? It’s hard. Stories about the hazards of over-scheduled and pressured kids abound, but so do all of the great opportunities. There are so many fun, educational, enriching things that our kids can do that it is hard to choose…or eliminate. The real issue is that word – eliminate. If we eliminate an activity, are we closing a door for the rest of their life? Are we ruining our kids’ chance for success in life?

Who wants that kind of guilt? No wonder we over-schedule our kids.

My husband and I have had this discussion many times. If we eliminate dance, are we ruining her chances at getting a “good part” in the musical? If we eliminate Scouts, are we ruining his chances to show leadership on the college resumes? If we eliminate playing in the summer league, will it ruin his chances at starting in the fall?

After years of rushing around, and carpools, and late nights, though, we came to believe that we should be asking ourselves some other questions. If we eliminate this activity will we be able to have family dinners? If we choose not to do this, will it allow our kids to go to bed at a decent hour? If we eliminate this activity, will it be a relief? These kinds of questions didn’t lead to quantifiable accomplishments, but they did lead us to a happier, more relaxed family.

This year my daughter took up an after-school sport that is one of those great opportunities, but it also meant that she wouldn’t be able to begin her homework until after 8 p.m.… if she continued with her dance classes. Neither of us thought that would be good for her grades or her sleep, and so we decided to let dance go. It was a bittersweet choice, and maybe one day we will regret it, but not nearly as much as I would regret robbing her of her chance to say, “the rest of the time I like to relax and do nothing.”

I think kids are over-booked these days. I am in shock over some of the activities the boys' friends go through...soccer, baseball, karate, AND piano? All this by the time they were 7.

I think in districts where kids are released from school by 2 or 3 after school activities might be a good thing once or twice a week. But my boys don't get out until 4, home until 4:30 pm, then they do 1/2 hour of homework. They will either relax and do nothing for an hour until dinner, or swim, or play with their friend behind us, working on their "fort" until I yell out for them to come home. (I've thought about getting a "dinner bell" to ring). They do taekwondo twice a week unless we have an event and the event comes first. I like taekwondo because there's no forced committment. I can pick when to attend.

They want to do a sport and I have found a group that does practice one day a week followed by a game on the same day. I will give that a try when the next season opens. And we'll do basketball because it's indoors and we won't be subjected to the extreme heat and humidity afternoons we experience in the DMV.

My sons were more scheduled. They seemed to want to do all a lot of those things. DD on the other hand would get very stressed out when over scheduled and not enough down time Fortunately she does not suffer from 'fear of missing out", FOMO, so she choose to not do some things this year that her friends do. She and i spend a lot of time in the kitchen together baking and cooking instead.

The boys are interested in participating in sports, well #1 anyway, #2 just goes along with what his brother wants. But they get exhausted as it is and I don't want to over-schedule. And it seems once they do things for awhile, they tire (bore) of it.

The latest bit is they want to learn strings next year. They both have chosen the bass.

Some of these things just go on too long. DD plays softball for fun. And now it is starting to drag on and we are getting tired of it!

I agree! The sports thing I found is 6 weeks. That's long enough I think.

Some of these things go on forever. With playoffs, blah blah. Now, of course I don't mind if basketball goes on forever, it absolutely should! Lol. Everything else, not so much.

And, some of these coaches are a bit much too. DD got hurt in her last softball game. A hard whack to her leg with some swelling. So, i held her out of the game the next night and had miss a practice. The coach still wanted her to come to practice to sit there. Um, no. She is coming home after school to ice her leg. That's just stupid in my opinion.

I hate over-scheduling. Extras have their place, but they shouldn't be all-consuming. I pretty much hate the current sports programs, they require you to sacrifice all free time to the sport.

I have the opposite problem with dd. She's a doer. She likes having stuff to do at all times. I don't mind accommodating so long as she is enjoying it and it's not stressing the family out.

My mom tried to sign my kids up for any and everything when they were little.

Of course she didn't want to help with getting three kids to all the different places.

I set a one activity at a time per kid rule.

Sometimes activities would overlap, like Caitlyn would be finishing up cheering for football when the musical would begin practice, but never more than a week or two.

My cousin schedules every second of their day.

From 6 am until 11pm, they never see their house.

They do homework and have meals in the car between practices and games.

Those kids don't know what to do with themselves when they do get a few minutes of down time.

I watched her daughter break down and cry one day because the game was cancelled last minute and she had no clue how to handle that.

I wasn't necessarily a single parent, but I may as well have been. Ex never went to a practice, a ball game, a recital, a competition...nothing.

DD was in dance from 3yo until 6th grade when she started cheering. Dance was 2 nights a week, 3 hours. DS played baseball from 3 until 4th grade, then switched to football. Baseball was practice 3 nights a week until the season started, then 2 nights of games, and 1 night of practice. And Saturday games.
Football was 3 nights a week, 5-8, practice and games on Saturday. Sometimes the games were a couple of hours away.

But DD's HS cheering was the most ridiculous of all. Practice after school from 3-5, then gymnastics from 5:30 - 8 M-Th. Games on Friday night, volunteering on Saturday. And that was just during Football Season. Basketball was practice from 3-5, M-W, gymnastics 5:30 -8. Thursday, half the girls cheered for the JV basketball team after practice, the others went to gymnastics. Friday, the other half would cheer for the V team and the others would go to gymnastics.

And then there were competitions.

People think cheerleading isn't a sport. It is THE most grueling schedule I have ever heard of. Oh, and they had to keep an A/B average or they were off the team. One thing I can say, they sure didn't get into any trouble. They didn't have time...

My boss's daughter cheered. It is a sport. It was so intense.

As for her grazing, she does appear to be large for an 11 year old. But I've noticed that kids are bigger than they were when I was growing up. A lot bigger. Take a look at movies made in the 1970's and you'll see the difference. Or watch old American Bandstand or Soul Train shows. Those bodies were normal. Thin. Everyone was so thin. Maybe it was a California thing? I don't know, but that's how it was when I grew up. Today I see kids and "thin" is more unusual than "thick."

Are we gonna fat shame an 11 yr old? One pic doesn't tell the story. We all have pics where look bigger. And, girls tend to start gaining some weight around the time they start their periods. Some of DD's friends were quite chunky. Now, they are 15 and you don't even recognize them because they have changed so much and thinned out.

I look at picts of DD when she was 12. Braces, tummy, big thighs. By the time she was 16 she weighed 90 pounds soaking wet. She is and was 4'10". Now 100 pounds.
I was a tub at 11. A whopping 110 pounds.

I have tried to teach my kids that pop is a dessert, not a drink.  It's no different than having cake, pie, etc.

Tig, I don't see where LGS was being passive aggressive. I for one have not read any of NJN's threads about concern over her SS's weight. Or if I did, it was so long ago I had forgotten. I don't think your snark was necessary.

I don't let the boys drink coke or any carbonated drinks unless we're at/having a party. Otherwise, it's water and milk. #1 is skinny as a rail so he gets whole milk. #2 gets 2%.

SS might grow into it, but it's definitely something that I would be trying to watch. Which is hard, because when they aren't there, who knows what they eat.

Nope.  Genetically modified food and high fructose corn syrup entered the food supply in the late 1990s.

My boys would sit in front of their Kindles or video games all day long if we let them. We require they get outside and play for a couple hours (at least) each day. They do get some HFCS in their foods, but not much. And they know it's not good for you, so they are aware when it's in the food they eat outside of the home.

Actually, I will correct myself. High fructose corn syrup has been around since 1976 when it started to replace sugar. They started using genetically modified corn in it in the late 1990s. As soon as HFCS was used to replace sugar, obesity rates started rising. Since genetically modified foods were added, we've had tremendous spikes in food allergies and autism, as well as obesity.

Interesting. Personally, I never saw anything wrong with sugar in the first place, if taken in moderation. I'm not sure they the food industry feels the need to start messing with it, or replacing it with chemicals that simulate sweetness. Did they learn nothing from the saccharine debacle?

High fructose corn syrup is cheaper than regular sugar. Kind of like concentrated orange juice is cheaper than the real stuff.  So they save manufacturing costs by using crap.

That was just an example.  Nothing wrong with concentrated orange juice unless they supplement it with crap.

I'm pretty sure in the 1970's they didn't. But they might now, I don't know. My boys don't like pulp so when I do buy it, (usually during the holidays when I want mimosas), I buy pulp-free.
