I am flying out tomorrow morning to attend my son's graduation from the Air Force Basic Training in San Antonio, Lackland Air Force base. I haven't flow in quite awhile. I will go online later and view the policies of the airline. But, just in general, can i take on a carry on? Can i take my contact lens solution, hair spray, and toiletry products or do i need to put those in luggage to be boarded? I am planning to get there 2 hours in advance. Is that enough time? Flying out of Pittsburgh. What about layovers, we have one so is there anything i should know about that? I havent' flow in years so any tips would be great!
In general, yes you can bring a carry on. Whenever I fly I always bring my toiletries in a small carry on bag as well as some snacks. (you never get enough from the stewardess) Try to only include smaller toiletries tho. You know... a small hairspray, a small tube of toothpaste etc. Only cuz you dont need a bag filled with industrial sized contact lense cleaner and such. OH, and if you have any hand wipes, bring them too. It helps to wipe the face if the cabin gets a bit stuffy.
Two hours in advance is perfect.
How long is your layover? Shorter than 30 minutes and you may be in trouble. But nothing you can do about it now. Just hope your plane isn't late getting to the layover. At any rate, you don't have to worry about your checked baggage. They will take care of switching it out for you out on the tarmack. All YOU have to do is get your carryon, get off the plane, look up at the console to see what gate your layover is at, and get there as quick as possible. If a long layover... go have a drink and read the paper and people watch. Just be sure to check in at the new gate to be sure nothing changed. (I had a gate change on me once and didnt know it till someone flagged me down and told me our connection moved to a diff gate!)
The TSA's website will have the info you need for number of ounces of a liquid allowed in a carry on. I think it's 3oz per item. When I flew on Southwest in May 2016, all liquid items had to be able to fit in one quart size baggie and it had to be able to close. You're allowed to bring an empty water bottle through security that you can fill up at a water fountain once you're past security.
Southwest allowed 1 carry on and 1 personal item. The carry on has to be within certain dimensions (which were given on their site).
You cannot take ANY liquid over 3 oz in your carryon. So, if you have a 5 oz bottle of contact lens solution, even it there is just a few drops in it, you cannot take it. They will throw it away. Same with hair spray and shampoo. Walgreens has flight kits that hold exactly 3 oz of (lotion, shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, mouthwash), whatever is liquid. I would suggest getting one of those and putting your toiletries in there if you plan to carry them on. If you check them, then the size doesn't matter...

Definitely get a refillablle water bottle. Take it in empty. They either have fill-fountains or even the shops can fill with ice and water for you. You can take snacks with you. Airport food is expensive. I took crackers, clementine oranges and grapes in a dollar store container last time I flew.
If you tend to get cold, bring a light sweater or small lightweight blanket. Headphones. Rechargable battery charger thing. Don't forget the power cords to recharge.
No lighters, pocket knives, nail clippers. I got stopped for nail clippers.
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Socks thru security since you have to take off your shoes.

Definitely socks if you don't have pre-check. Nothing nastier than having your bear feet going through security...
I can take my lighter, I just can't take my torch lighter.

You don't need to remove your shoes anymore. but wear sneakers so you are comfortable. Do not put valuables in your checked luggage. Leave them at home. Do not bring a wrapped present through security, they will make you unwrap it. If you carry a purse, bring a second check in larger bag your purse can fit in along with your book or other stuff you want quick access to; place that larger bag under the seat in front of you.

Yes, nothing over 3 oz. Drug stores sell travel sized bottles and a clear bag to put them in (you'll need a clear bag for all liquids, too) so you can pour your solution in that if you want to make sure you have it JIC checked bags are lost.
I have taken matches, nail clippers, and essential oils on but they were in my purse and just didn't check. I just forgot they were in my purse. My family is always amazed what I get through, but I am not doing it intentionally.
Not all airports require you to remove shoes, but wear slip-ons, JIC. Try not to wear big jewelry, watches or belts that will set it off. It will make it faster.
2 hours is plenty of time. I usually allow 1 1/2 hours now, flying out of Dulles.
I have checked wine in my suitcase as well as pineapple syrup from Hawaii. But I have put kerastase oil (for my hair) and had them open my checked bag and opened my suitcase at my hotel and found they did not screw the lid on tight enough and it leaked and was no more. So even checked bags, I put liquids in a ziploc so that if it does leak, it doesn't get all over everything else. (The randomly search checked bags. Sometimes it will arrive with a TSA label across it (which means it was searched), and sometimes it's not searched. Do not lock your checked bags.
Go to the travel size section of CVS and you'll probably find a good hair spray and other items that are in TSA approved size. That helps.

Oh, yes you do need to remove your shoes. G has pre check, but every once in a while, they make him go through security. He had to remove his shoes just last weekend...

It may depend on the threats of the day. I haven't had to remove the shoes in the past year.
