I think it depends on your situation. They really are just a huge lobbyist group and your dues go toward the lobbyist's salaries and buying perks to give to politicians. If you work or have AAA any of the group discounts you can get through AARP are already available to you.

That's exactly what I thought about the whole thing but I keep getting mail from AARP and it's starting to annoy me. I don't want to join and get at least one envelope twice a month from them for over ten years now. It's a bit ridiculous the money being spent to solicit membership. Take that money and feed the hungry or house the homeless.

There are discounts other than just prescriptions and insurance.

A lot of restaurants, hotels, entertainment discounts, too.

I think anyone should look at their lifestyle and see how well it fits.

Some will use it more than others.

But really, it is just another way to monitor an age group.

I'm a member. It's worth the fee for hotel discounts alone.

I received my first request to join aarp, when I was 47. I remained it with a note saying that being 47 is not a senior citizen yet. I didn't receive another request till I turn 55.

I was around the same age, lindley, when I first started receiving mail from them (almost 15 years now). You would think they'd get the hint that I'm not joining after all this time. I wish they would stop. I wish they would put to better use the yearly postage they spend to send to people all this and save the landfills around the country from it all.

So... if you had stage 4 cancer and were told you would not live beyond 5 years, would you sign up for aarp?

Yes.

There is a lot of living that can be done in 5 years.

would not give them a dime--cancelled my membership years ago--don't want others to make assumptions about me based on the agenda/leanings of AARP
