OK, with summer approaching, we need to get our fun on. But, how about a challenge to just try something new? Doesn't have to be a big thing. Maybe it's an new ingredient? Or, maybe a new road to a familiar place, etc. Anything that is new and different to you!
I'm going to try growing my own strawberries this year. I do try to grow something new and different each year. Last year was a disaster though with the invasion of the gypsy moth caterpillars so I'm hoping it's not as bad this year. Oh and I did buy some sumac spice and tried it for the first time. It was delicious in my chicken dish.

Build a bird proofing cover!
I planted 4 strawberry plants several years ago. Between Caitlyn, dad, the birds and squirrels, I never saw a single one.
They don't produce much the first year.
I'm sure you've done a lot of research, these things are very needy.

Folks, not only am I trying something new, I am going way WAY way out of my comfort zone. I mean like... it has been years that folks have told me I should do this, and only now after 19 years am I doing it. What is it and what got me to do it?
Karate
My Son29 used to do Karate when he was younger. He started around the time he was 11 and then I pulled him out when he was 13 cuz his grades were bad. BAD MOVE MOM. This lead to him not having a hobby and finally taking up with some skater doods. I have no problem with the sport of skating... but I DO have a problem with the other extracurricular activities normally associated with the group. He now has an addiction to pot that I dont know if he will ever get past. Anyway...
My Son12 started Karate a few years ago and only just recently got burned out and quit after reaching his High Brown belt. This kid rocks and I am so proud he got so far.
When Son12 joined, my Hubby decided "hey, I am bringing him here for classes and I am already here, I might as well join him." and he too worked his way up thru the ranks. Last month, he won the Black Belt Excellence award while getting his first degree Black Belt. It is a high honor to receive this award and only one person from each Black Belt graduating class gets it.
What does all this have to do with me? Well... a year ago I told him and a few other folks that if he won the award, I would join Karate. There were a few other candidates that were doing such a great job though so I really didnt think he would win it. Towards graduation tho I started to get nervous of wth I was thinking.
My introverted self was screaming. So, I went to my Son29 and got him to agree to join with me if Dad won the award. He has been wanting a new hobby (skating has caused him to have serious knee problems so he cant skate anymore) and he remembered how much he liked karate but was too shy to join back up all by himself. (He is an introvert like I am) so he agreed to do it with me if Dad won.
Well, Dad won and Son29 and I started our first class a week ago. We have gone to three classes so far and I cannot flippin believe I am doing this!!!!!! And SON! Holy guacamole on a chip! You should see him! His technique and form is spot on! He is fierce and awesome looking doing his forms and kicks! Me I am just stumbling along like the goofy mom I am, but I totally don't mind cuz he is doing it with me!
Whew! This is scary for me but I am doing it doggone it! I am DOING IT!
DO it! I started Kenpo many years ago but stopped to study for the bar then I moved and couldn't find a Dojo back here that taught this style. I loved it! My boys are doing taekwondo and are blue belts currently. I have thought about giving it a try, but I really like Kenpo better. I don't want to perform, I just want to be able to kick some ass if I have to. LOL
It's a great way to get exercise and stay in shape as well as giving you the means to defend yourself if you ever need to. Now you've got me thinking of taking it up...

Last night was class three and as son and I were leaving I started to stare down all the moms and pops that were there as a result of their kiddos being in class. I was like "ok, we are the only adults in this white belt class. Who is gonna join us!? You are here anyway cuz they are here, what is stopping you?" I think I almost got one dad thinking!

Cheerios, Love that you are doing martial arts! What style?
FNW, we used to have a master Kempo school here but the owner has retired. Bushido is great, if you can find it. So is Krav Maga. What style of TKD are the boys doing? I did Moo Duk Kwon Tae Kwon Do (Korean style, not American) for many years when I was younger. Instructors son was an alternate for the Olympic team when TKD debuted in Korea in 1988 and I was a part of his training as a fellow student. I miss the workouts but my body just cannot handle it anymore.
For those who ever need to use it in self defense, remember to take out the knee first. If the perp cannot stand, he cannot walk or run after you.
That was what I learned as well. Kick through the knee, he bends over, strike up and he practically moves into it, resulting in more impact, as he's back from the strike, go for vulnerable areas, etc. Ends with the dance of death. Gosh, there was this move that if someone comes up from behind and wraps his arms around me to detain me, I could free myself and drop him on his ass. It worked great, I just can't remember now what it was.
The boys are learning Korean style. They have to learn Korean vocabulary as well, to pass tests.
I'm not sure my body could handle the birthing of the belts anymore, much less training. But my mind tells me otherwise. LOL
