Sounds like the mother might be part of the problem.
She sounds like the whole problem. She doesn't want to deal with it b/c it's easier to let him stuff his face with whatever he wants than to feed him right and parent responsibly. An intervention sounds necessary. Has she been seriously confronted about it when she tries to laugh it off?

Her excuse for the sugar thing was that he probably had the hiccups. She said she eats sugar when she has the hiccups. He didn't have the hiccups and that's still gross. She just makes excuses for him. She told us she doesn't cook a lot but lets them live off protein bars so they're getting all their nutrients.

Yes, she's a chef. She makes them decent meals sometimes. I guess I just don't understand her whole mentality. To make it worse both sides of his family suffer greatly from diabetes. Like everyone in the family has it. Two of his grandparents died from complications. One has it now. (One died of other causes.) His uncle just had his leg cut off from diabetes. It runs rampant. He is a sitting duck.
