In Illinois to carry a concealed gun one must take a 16 hour class, pass it, and then submit an application with the State Police who may approve it after doing background checks, etc.
Peeps I am a gun owner. My guns were purchased legally and I hold an Illinois Foid card (also requires background checks and the like. I am not certain I will ever carry but I wanted the knowledge that the class afforded and the right to carry if I think its necessary (like traveling in the car or something)
It was stressed in the class that once one decides to carry a gun then they are held to a higher standard. They are not to be the instigator or an altercation etc.
Anyway a co-worker thinks I am an idiot that I took the class and will apply for the card. She says if someone breaks into her house she is going to shoot them and wants to be able to say she does not know the laws, etc. It is true that Illinois law does not have s Castle Doctrine so someone breaking into your house would actually have to be trying to hurt you - its not enough that they are in your house.
In South Carolina if someone is on your property or in your home and you feel your life or another person's life is in danger you have the right to shoot to kill. Permit or no permit. Apply for the card, one day you may not be able to.
Have been told by several officers, and a couple lawyers, if I shot someone on my property, make sure they fall inside the house.

Oh! And good for you getting that class and going for the permit.

well, am not a peeps--as per self-defense, regardless of any law school curriculum, it is an absolute right here in the us and throughout most of the western world--in the face of a genuine threat, the defense of your own life(or that of your loved ones) by whatever means necessary (up to and including deadly force) is justified

Ed what was stressed in the class is that you have to be actually defending your life or a loved ones. So for example if someone breaks into your housr you can't go hunting for them in the house and shoot them. What they said is you pick an imaginary red line. It could be the hallway leading to the bedrooms of you and your kids. Anyone going past that line runs the risk of being shot buy if someone broke in - stayed in the kitchen and stold all your pots and pans and then left - you would be better off to just let them have the pans- its just stuff. But to defend your own life or your childrens from imminent attack is a whole nother matter.
Here in NH our laws do not include a mandate to register or get a permit except of concealed carry although the gun shops have to do a background check so purchase of a gun will be on record. My gun was a gift so no one knows I have it, well except you peeps.
I will warn you since the concealed carry permits are at the desecration of your local PD, I know in some states they drag their feet on giving out permits, some will take your application and not grant you one, they don't deny it, they just drag their feet.

The problem is living in Illinois. But, I would personally feel better being knowledgeable and confident with my gun, and have the ability to carry it where I want. As for drawing that imaginary line - I can't imagine a jury convicting a woman shooting an intruder when there are kids in the house.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
It's pretty unlikely someone is there to steal pots and pans. And I think you have the right to assume you are in danger of life and limb if someone breaks into your home. So, yeah, he lunged at me, bang.
The class talked about many instances were people were convicted of hurting people who broke in to their homes. They stressed that while one may not be convicted criminally - They could still be sued civilally and that those lawsuits were very costly to defend from.

you're overthinking the scenario you propose(which, incidentally, has nothing at all to do with concealed carry)--in a home invasion, whatever the motivations of the intruder, it is YOUR prerogative to respond to the threat to yourself or your loved ones with whatever force YOU deem is necessary to neutralize/eliminate/kill the intruder--the thing you MUST remember is that if you choose to respond with a firearm(and especially if the INTRUDER is armed)you're intent is to disable/kill them so that you/your loved ones survive the event--you may have a few seconds only and you have to be(for the safety of yourself and your loved ones)clear and focused on what it is you have to do--forget about hollywood and focus on center mass and keep firing till they run away(if they're able) or go down
concealed carry comes into play in typically public scenarios--each of those situations/scenarios requires more complex judgments than any sort of home invasion
we have both open and concealed carry here and quite frankly am often concerned with the state of training/capability of a lot of the permit holders--used to carry myself and still do from time to time but know definitely what am capable of doing--not so much many of the permit holders around me

Illinois is a crazy place to be living for gun owners. In all practicality, you SHOULD be able to shoot once someone crosses your threshhold, however the reality is that in Illinois, crazy things happen in the courts. That while you may be right, you could be in jail all the same.
I think it would be smart for me to take a gun safety
course - not that I want to shoot a gun, but rather to
be safe around them. DH, having been in the military,
of course knows how to shoot, plus most farmers his
age have always had to defend their livestock from
predators. I know which end to point, but I have no
idea how to load or clean a shotgun.
Momala that is me too. I dont have the fascination with guns dh has but I like that I understand how to work them. It took away alot of the fear (I still have a healthy fear) and made me understand how to be safe around them.
