A teenager accidentally shot and killed his girlfriend while showing off a gun he was given as a graduation present Thursday night, according to police.
Memphis police said Brennan Fields, 18, was given the firearm as a high-school graduation gift by the father of his girlfriend, Lucinda Luna.
He was admiring the gift at the 19-year-old girl's home in Arlington, Tennessee, when he accidentally shot Luna in the stomach, according to WMC.
Luna was rushed to the hospital, but died from her injuries.
Shelby County Sheriff's Office officials said there are no plans to file charges against Fields.
'By all indications, there was no intent for this to happen,' spokesperson Earle Farrell told WMC.

Luna's neighbor and close friend Kara Stubblefield told WMC she is 'distraught' over the girl's sudden death.
About her friend, Stubblefield said 'she was always reading. Every time I went over there she was like "here you need to read this book."'
She also said Fields was experienced with guns, that he owned several and goes to the shooting range frequently.
'This is going to hurt real bad for him. Like he's not going to get over this for a long time. I'm just worried about Brennan really and her parents too,' Stubblefield said.
Buying someone else's child a gun? What the freak?
Why not? Guns are an awesome gift? This is just a horrible accident. Just as if he received a car as a gift and accidentally ran her over.
I would not buy a car or a gun or anything like that for another person's child. I would not buy an ATV for another friend's child. I had a small mini bike that i was going to give to a friend for his grandson but decided not too. I don't want to gift someone something like that. Certain gifts come with a high level of responsibility.
The real question is why were there bullets in the gun and who put them in there? That person should be charged. If he gave him a LOADED gun as the gift, then the father should be arrested. Sounds like he set this up.
I have no problem with the gift of a gun but if he was just given it and it discharged as he was admiring it, why was the damn thing loaded in the first place? There is no way it should've been loaded. OMG!

How do you know the father didn't get an ok first from the parents? They could have all been close friends. Article doesn't address the relationship.

Then, they are all idiots. If i wanted my kid to have a gun, i would gift it to him/her. Not someone else. And, certainly not a non relative. That's bizarre to me.
The only problem I see is the gun was loaded and the safety was off.
As for a gift, it's a perfect gift for someone who, as the article said, has guns and is knowledgeable of them.
And while it is young, 18 is no longer a child.
That is a young adult who can vote, join the military, and has control over their medical needs. They no longer need the parent to grant permission, sign anything, or even be present for anything.

However, guns don't have light triggers. Most require some serious pull force to fire it. You don't just bump it and it goes off. Squeezing the trigger is very purposeful.
I didn't see it in the article, what kind of gun was it?

That's not necessarily true. I remember as a younger woman shooting blue rock at the local gun club. I borrowed a gun from a older gentleman, a regular of the club for years, extremely knowledgeable about guns, especially his own. He warned me it was a "hair trigger". I thought I knew and ultimately almost blew my foot off. Not all guns are hard to fire.
did the boy load the weapon? if not, then is on the party that gave him the weapon to explain CLEARLY the functioning/safety particulars of the firearm
can only think of a handful of times have EVER handed someone else a loaded/in battery firearm and NEVER to a first-time owner

Sad, all the way around. But easily preventable 30-40 years ago when kids were properly raised around guns, and KNEW to never assume that they aren't loaded, or KNEW to NEVER point a gun at something you don't intend to kill.
I blame the anti-gun people for the dumbing down of America's youth when it comes to firearms.
I hope they are really going to investigate this. Somebody loaded that weapon. It wasn't loaded and handed to him at the gun store. No way. So, the father loaded it and gave it to him that way, which assinine. Or, the boy loaded it after receiving it or the father loaded it after it was open. To me, I would find that answer and then prosecute accordingly.
