Drug Overdose Now Leading Cause of Death for Americans Under 50

Drug overdose is now the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 50, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said Tuesday morning. Rosenstein, along with acting head of the Drug Enforcement Agency, Chuck Rosenberg, and other prominent officials in law enforcement addressed the media at the DEA’s headquarters in Arlington, VA to discuss the ongoing response to the nation’s staggering opioid epidemic.

“We’re not talking about a slight increase. There’s a horrifying surge of drug overdoses in the United States of America. Some people say we should be more permissive, more tolerant, more understanding about drug use. I say we should be more honest and forthcoming with the American people on the clear and present danger that we know face,” opened Rosenstein.

“Fentanyl is especially dangerous. It is 40 to 50 times more deadly than heroin. Just two milligrams, a few grains of salt, an amount you could fit on the tip of your finger, can be lethal. Fentanyl exposure can injure or kill innocent law enforcement officers and first responders. Inhaling a few airborne particles can have dramatic effects,” he continued.

Rosenstein, Rosenberg, and their colleagues used the event to roll out new precautions for first responders in dealing with fentanyl. Such measures predominately featured hazmat suits as a means of avoiding airborne inhalation.

“[Fentanyl]’s everywhere and it’s killing people,” Rosenberg solemnly remarked.

Despite such a bleak update, Rosenberg claimed reasons for careful optimism in the midst of this epidemic. He has spoken extensively with his Chinese counterparts in law enforcement, given that China is the major source of Fentanyl that enters America. According to Rosenberg, the Chinese government banned 116 synthetic opioids for export and 4 more after his trip to China this March. Additional synthetics are scheduled to be banned as well.

“I do not want to understate such gains, nor do I want to overstate them,” he cautioned. More progress in international cooperation, he said, still has to be made in cutting off fentanyl shipments from China.

Rosenberg and other law enforcement officials such as Jonathan Thompson of the National Sheriffs’ Association assessed the difficulty associated with training first responders in such new duties and admitted that such efforts would strain already stretched resources in fighting what is an overwhelming epidemic.

Rosenberg’s daunting assessment of fentanyl put in perspective the existential danger of the ongoing opioid crisis that, according to Rosenstein, has contributed to the largest yearly increase in overdose deaths on record in America.

Rosenberg pointed out that such statistics tend to “wash over you.” To grasp the enormity of the epidemic he claimed that if three mass-shootings as deadly as the Pulse Nightclub Attack occurred three times every day for 365 days, then the death toll would roughly reach that of drug overdoses in 2015.

10 years ago it was Oxycontin.

I wonder if they have figured out how many deaths are caused by prescription drug use/abuse. Damn big pharma.

It is sad really. People just want to escape from the reality of their lives. I think that there are a lot of factors. The breakdown of families and communities, the lack of religion and strong morality and beliefs, etc. And, doctors and pharmacists need to work together. Doctors should have access to their patient pharmacy records. If someone is seeking a lot of early refills or has a lot of excuses for lost prescriptions, etc, then the doctor prescribing needs to take a look at that. Perhaps some do. But, a lot of them don't.
On the other hand, it has swung the other way where doctors are afraid to prescribe for fear of being accused of overprescribing. Then, people with legitimate pain needs go to the streets to seek relief and become addicted or overdose trying to treat their own pain.

Well the deaths are not caused by prescription drug being over prescribed, the addiction is however.  The Fentenyl  (spelling?) coming from the Dominican Republic and China is the biggest issue in OD cases currently.  It isn't even heroin.  This week a huge Fentanayl drug ring was busted.  Guess what?  All were from the Dominican and all Illegally here.

But were they trafickers in their own Country or ones sending it to the U.S or elsewhere?  Many of these Countries enforce laws only when it affects their own Country, but look the other way when the drugs are sent overseas.

I don't know how anyone can afford to become addicted, much less overdose.

They steal. Crime rates for stealing from homes and businesses is way up.

ETA: it takes only $30 to OD.

I think there an increased hopelessness especially in young adults that all have low self esteem due to being treated like snowflakes and now they're realizing the world judges you by your accomplishments not a trophy for existing.
So many unhappy people and they self medicate. It's sad but I partially blame our feel good society and coddling for this.
Some may disagree but that's how I feel about it. And my feeeeeeelings are all important ya know

I completely agree.  True self esteem comes from within.  Not others propping you up.  True self esteem comes from impressing yourself.  What do you do that impresses yourself?  I feel good about myself when i try a new recipe and learn some new cooking techniques.  Or, when i clean the bathroom or clean out my closet.  Or, when i do a great job at work, etc.  That's where real self esteem comes from.  Not from others telling you that your schit don't stink!!  lol

Well, that's the real problem, isn't it?  We used to be taught that you were supposed to be considerate of others feelings.  I don't think they teach that anymore.

Dr Laura said something along the lines that too many people go by feelings and emotion instead of facts, morals and obligation. I don't agree with her all of the time but definitely agree with this.
People are becoming emotionally stunted as adults

It's so easy to get a presentation for pain relievers. Every time I get dental work they offer it.
