DEAR ABBY: I have been a daily reader of your column since I was a little girl, so your answer to my question will be valued.
I eat an apple every day on my drive home from work, and when I'm done, I toss the core out the window. I try my best to support the Earth, and I believe I am feeding the rabbits and birds with my apple a day. Friends insist that what I'm doing is littering and helping neither the furry friends nor the environment. Can you help solve the debate -- to toss or not to toss? Thanks! -- AN APPLE A DAY
DEAR A.A.A.D.: I, too, love our furry and feathered creatures, but I agree with your friends. What you are doing is littering, regardless of how you're rationalizing it. If you truly want to support the Earth, keep a small container in your vehicle for the apple core and dispose of it when you get home.
I think it depends on where you "toss" it. If it's in the woods, no biggie. If you toss it on someone's front lawn or on the road, it's littering.
I may or may not have tossed banana peels into the woods while picnicking. I may or may not have tossed stale bread or apple cores into the woods. I may or may not have tossed chewed gum into my garden. I figure if it's biodegradable and not littering someone's personal property, it's fair game.
I live in a rural area so i would toss an apple core into the woods. I certainly would not toss out anything like a napkin, etc. And, I agree, i would not be tossing it on someone's lawn , etc.
I don't think an apple core, banana peel, or the like is littering unless it is in someone's yard. And I'm pretty much a zealot when it comes to not littering.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
An apple core takes approximately 7 days to biodegrade completely. Tossing an apple core is better than filling a plastic bag full of them then sending it to a landfill.

I disagree with dear abby wholeheartedly on this. The apple core will biodegrade quickly and has no negative impact on the environment. It is NOT littering.

Totally agree.

I'd rather find an apple core than a cigarette butt in my yard.
