Yippee. Excited for this even though we are in 60% viewing level. Still at the beach and it is a beautiful, clear day.

I realized yesterday that viewing the eclipse from the comfort of my front or back porch isn't going to happen. The sun will be directly over the building at the time of the eclipse. I will have to drive somewhere to see it and I will. I really want to try to get a quick pic of it. I'm in the 60 go 70% range I think. I need to figure out what time it'll be around here.

Other than that, it's a beautiful start to the day here. Clear as a bell at this point. Have to work this evening. Hope everyone has a safe eclipse day!

I heard you won't supposed to take pictures with your phone.  It'll ruin it.

Morning.

On our way to totally eclipse land. I had a shocker though. We stopped at McDs for DH to get some coffee. I ran in to use the rest room. There was a MAN in the bathroom, not a transgender, a man man. He was on the phone talking. It was so weird! He left before I did or I would have gone to the manager.

How odd, DE.

I got to my Mom's yesterday afternoon.

We are looking forward to watching the eclipse.

Have a great day, everyone!smile

My dd made the same thing as fine for her dd and my DVD to watch the eclipse. Personally I can't wait for it to be over. That was strange DE. I wonder if he was so involved with who he was talking to that he didn't pay attention to what bathroom he walked into.

Up and about to get at it.

Need to put away all the vacation stuff, do the regular Monday cleaning.

My brother came in last night to view the eclipse, I have a feeling the ball fields across the road will be a popular viewing area.

Family reunion this coming Sunday.

That is if you set it up to video for the entire process. Yes, the lens magnifies the suns intensity and will melt / destroy some of the internal features. I don't plan to do that. I'll point and shoot. But I won't be using my phone. I'll use my DSLR camera. A quick shot. No biggie.

DH bought sheets of the special lens material for our cameras. I'm going to attempt to video the entire process.

I have UV and Polarized filters for mine. I figure for a quick point and shoot that should suffice. It can't be any different than driving down the highway with the sun directly in my face when it's setting. lol

I would love to see the video!

I'll take a few shots over my shoulder with my camera, not my iphone, JIC. I might just take the boys to their school to view from the field. We'll see. They're expecting a large crowd at camp, and with all the trees, it might not be a good spot to view.

Lots of clouds here today - don't think
we'll have a very good viewing spot.
But that's OK - we'll see lots of it on TV.

Can I safely view it with a telescope?

I wouldn't think so, IKWTDS. You'd still need to protect the telescope's lens and your eyes.

No, in fact viewing through a telescope is worse from what I've read. Not sure why.

That is a good point about the sun in your face driving. I should keep my eclipse glasses in my car!

We're getting warnings about doing that. We're told to pull over somewhere safe during the event.

You haven't looked through your eclipse glasses, yet, have you?  You can't see anything.  So, probably best not to use them driving.

When the sun is in my face while driving I can't see. biggrin

I think the biggest reason people are being told not to be on the road during the eclipse is because of the looky-loos.

Those watching the eclipse instead of the road.

We watched through a pin hole on the carport floor.

It was cool.

That was awesome
But you couldn't be focused just on the sun and moon. The lack of nature activity such as the birds and such was amazing. They are coming out now.

Yes, my aunt in Idaho noticed that as well. Quiet as can be while it occurred.

It was quiet, except for crickets.

But then again, it seems like we have a crap ton of crickets this year.

DSC_0497.JPG

So because I did not have eclipse glasses, I dug through my old film negatives and found some where the end of the roll was not developed. It's at the very end and extremely dark (almost black. I cut those down with just the black one and put two together and taped them over the lens of my camera. Then I found more and taped them over my polarized sunglasses. Here's a pic or two. I took 55 pics with my camera. Obviously not going to post them all. The only reason the pics look dark is because of the negatives on the lens. It didn't get dark here.

So film negatives act as a screen?

Yes, but it can't be a negative with a developed picture. It has to be the end of the roll where there is no pic and the negative looks black. If you put two of those together, it works fine.

ETA:  I had forgotten about being able to use negatives like that. A good friend who's a great photographer reminded me of it.

We had 99.91% coverage. It was absolutely amazing. It got so dark, you could see the stars and all of the street lights came on. The cicadas stopped chirping and after about 2 minutes, the crickets started. It was almost surreal.

None that really came out great.   I was enjoying it more than I was worried about picts.

I had G take 2 pair to Canada with him, and he and his friend came off the water just as the eclipse was starting. They got to see it too!  Not in totality, but about 3/4.  So we talked on the phone through the eclipse...it was fun to share it with him, bring in a different country...

These show us outside at the start of the eclipse, and then close to the coverage. You can see that the street light is on. It was darker than its looks in the picture...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I told my kids I wasn't buying those darned glasses because it was just going to be cloudy anyway and sure enough, a cloud passed over right around peak time. They now think I'm clairvoyant.

FYI one can still see the eclipse through the clouds if you have the glasses on.

It got dark here, too, but I wasn't sure if it was storm clouds or the eclipse.
