ESPN has pulled an Asian-American sportscaster named Robert Lee from assignment to a University of Virginia football game because his name is similar to the Confederate general's.

Lee was slated to call UVA's home opener in Charlottesville, Virginia against William and Mary on September 2, but has been transferred to cover Youngstown State at Pittsburgh, an ESPN official told DailyMail.com.

Lee's name is almost exactly the same as Confederate general Robert E. Lee, whose monument was at the center of a rally ten days ago that devolved into violent clashes between white nationalists and anti-fascists leaving one woman dead.

'We collectively made the decision with Robert to switch games as the tragic events in Charlottesville were unfolding, simply because of the coincidence of his name,' ESPN said in a statement.

'It's a shame that this is even a topic of conversation and we regret that who calls play by play for a football game has become an issue,' the statement continued.

The reassignment and ESPN's rationale for it were first reported by Outkick The Coverage

Robert Lee has been a professional sportscaster since 1999, according to his resume.

He joined ESPN last year as a play-by-play announcer for college football and basketball games.

Lee did not immediately respond to request for comment.

News of the switch, which seemed at first like a satirical riff on current events, came amid massive national controversy over the fate of Confederate monuments, with a special focus on Robert E. Lee.

The University of Texas removed four Confederate monuments, including one of Robert E. Lee, under cover of darkness early Monday.

Duke University did the same to a stone statue of the Confederate general, after vandals defaced it in the entryway to the school chapel in Durham, North Carolina.

Other vandals have taken matters into their own hands, defacing monuments in several states.

The statue of Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville will be covered with black fabric to mourn the death of Heather Heyer, the city council voted on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old woman was killed when a car slammed into a group of people protesting a white nationalist rally in the city.

Well, thus my point that simply tearing down some statues won't stop this. This will go on and on and on because angry entitled babies and are never going to be satisfied.

Wow! This is really getting out of control. I would say it's racist and discriminatory to pull him for the reasons given. I'm afraid this is going to get much worse before it gets better, if it does. People need to grow a conscience and stop with all this crap.

That is discrimination! Where is the ACLU fighting for his rights? What if his name was spelled Li? Would he still be removed? So all the people whose last names are the same as Southern war generals (Davis, Jackson, Forrest, McClellan, etc.) and such can't have jobs, especially if the names will be visible in the news or general public?

Geez is this stupid. Has this country totally lost it's mind? Special snowflakers can't even handle hearing a similar name. Some people really need to grow the hell up.

ESPN has lost it's mind.

And they wonder why their viewership is down..

I wonder when the nut jobs will start tearing down all the picket fences.

(only a history buff will understand)

I'll admit, I don't understand, czech. Although they are used a lot in colonial historic areas.

General Pickett was a Confederate General who lost at the Battle of Gettysburg. Remember "Pickett's Charge"? It was a massacre of his southern troops.

So, since a Confederate general had that name...

Yup, the nuts are that crazy.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

have been to gettysburg and walked the ground of that famous battle--the " charge " Pickett and his men made was not a cavalry charge in the hollywood sense, as most americans tend to imagine the scene but more akin to a march (albeit at the " quick step ") that covered more than a quarter mile, under fire and with no cover to speak of--that kind of courage and determination is more than most men can summon--though their casualties were alarming, their courage and sacrifice was heroic indeed--similar in ways to the alamo, those men decided " if we're going to die, then we're going to do it here. "--thought a lot of people scoff at the event and deem it as folly, it's usually because they know they lack the courage to have done it themselves

Have been to Gettysburg many times. I have ancestors, brothers, who fought on both sides. The O'Neal's Brigade monuments were for one of those ancestors. I didn't associate Pickett with picket fences. But you're right, czech, that will be next.

And of course, ESPN is trying to spin this now as they were concerned that Mr. Lee would be trolled and bullied online and that he actually expressed concern about it. Oh please....And I've read Mr. Lee actually goes by Bob so you know Bob Lee would certainly traumatize all the sensitive snowflakes out there? (Not sure if that's true, just something I read somewhere).
