130 NFL stars kneel or sit during anthem in defiance of Trump: Hundreds more including Brady link arms in solidarity as the President says 'disrespectful' players should be FIRED and calls for boycott

  • Trump had called for fans to boycott the NFL in a series of tweets early Sunday

NFL players have defiantly reacted to President Donald Trump's criticism, with at least 130 players kneeling, sitting linking arms, giving black power salutes and not even showing up for the national anthem out of protest.

Players from both the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars were the first to protest by taking a knee ahead of their game at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday morning. No players were kneeling during the playing of God Save The Queen - the British national anthem.

The defiance against Trump continued as games kicked off across the country with an unprecedented number of players kneeling and most teams in the early afternoon games locking arms in solidarity.

At least 20 Patriots players were spotted kneeling as Tom Brady linked arms with his teammates.

Pittsburgh Steelers players were absent from the sideline and remained in the locker room during the Star Spangled Banner. Alejandro Villanueva, who served three tours in Afghanistan, was the only Steelers' player to stand outside the tunnel for the anthem.

The protests from each team came in the wake of Trump's critical remarks toward players who don't stand for the anthem. Last week across the entire NFL, only four players knelt or sat, and two stood with their fists raised.

If it's in defiance of Trump, then they are simply following the PC crap.

People need to stop supporting these over paid brats.

President Trump was only saying what the fans were saying. My husband is done with football and a town close to where I live had a young man who made it to the pros and the moment he kneeled the people who were so proud of him are now disgusted with him and are also boycotting football. The NFL has been very political lately and I believe this is the last straw.

So the end of the NFL unless they straighten up.

Yup, this marks the end of the NFL. In five years they will be history and they destroyed themselves today.

DH refuses to watch all games now. DS caved today as well.

I do not know of a single veteran in support of the NFL as of today.

I'm just pissed that they are forcing their views on me because they are brain washed by the PC culture. IMHO, they are doing everything in their power to make US (you and me) their slaves. Not going to happen, ever.

How does THAT work? You are protesting against the very thing you are actively advertising???

None of this makes sense, they including  some  of the owners  supporting  the protest. I have seen some of the most devoted  fans said they were done with football.

Since when does the National Anthem equal the President in Office?? You do like the President? Fine. But the National Anthem is symbolic of over 240+ years of history. Lots of men died for this anthem; it is disrespect to all of them.

I agree.  Go ahead protest for what ever your cause is but don't disrespect this country.

It makes absolutely no sense. And professional football? Not a necessity. People just won't go. The money will talk. People will turn off their TVs and stop buying tickets. They are biting the hand that feeds them. The world doesn't need a bunch of whiny overpaid men that play a game for a living. We DO need people willing to risk their lives in the military, though.

And I'm willing to bet that there are a lot more conservative football fans than liberal. Just sayin'

The coach for the steelers criticized the one player who went out and stood up for the anthem, jerk! I guess they are mad that his standing up for the flag took away their thunder.

It was wrong to prevent the players from standing who wanted to go out. WHat a bunch of sissies except for the one player.

Tradition?  Playing it before every game started during WWII.

And I don't think the proper reaction to this mess is to stop playing it.  And the fact that it is played does not justify the disrespect being shown.

I've heard people praising these players for kneeling and complaining about people getting mad at those who are upset at the players for expressing their freedom of speech. I guess we are not allowed to practice our freedom of speech by disagreeing with then.

Yep. Apparently one needs to be a Democrat to exercise free speech.

Yes, they're angry at Trump for exercising his free speech by calling them SOBs but it's okay for the players to exercise free speech and disrespect the country? Talk about upside down morals.

It is played at the beginning of band competitions (at least around here). And at the end of our football games and competitions, we played taps while lowering and folding the flag

I don't know the answer to your question though. Maybe it has something to do with the competition aspect?

Apparently the NFL employee handbook says they are supposed to stand at the sidelines quietly during the national anthem holding their helmets. Now, not sure if that is true or not. HOwever, regardless, you do not have first amendment rights at work. You can fired for what you do or say at work . They could be fined. But this isn't the end. Liberals destroy everything they get their hands on. This is going to snowball into more and more demands .

The NFL rulebook makes no mention of the national anthem. But the game operations manual does.
Here's what the game operations manual says regarding the national anthem, according to an NFL spokesperson:
The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem.
During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking. The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses.
It's important to note the use of the word "may" here. The NFL is not considering punishing fines on players or teams who choose to kneel or stay in the locker room during the national anthem, the spokesperson says.— Sean Gregory contributed to this report.

And that one player has now back peddled and said he accidentally ended up out of the tunnel by himself.  He says he didn't realize the team had stopped walking behind him.   He APOLOGIZED for making his coach and team look bad by recognizing the national anthem. no

His jersey was the #1 seller today...will it be the #1 in returns tomorrow?  I hope so.

It should be boycotted every day.

And I'm getting tired of the "freedom of speech" argument. Freedom of speech doesn't mean people have to agree with you. In fact, the people that disagree with you also have freedom of speech. And the public's freedom of speech includes the freedom not to support the NFL with their entertainment dollars.

Freedom of speech does not apply to you as an employee. There aren't freedom of speech rights at your job. Your employer may fire you for not doing or saying whatever are the terms of your employment. I can't go to work and start yelling at customers about global warming or lecturing them on starving children, etc.

Does anyone know what the protest is about anymore? I thought it was against abusive police, then racial equality, now against Trump? My neck hurts from the whiplash over this.

We watch football on Saturday (college), but that's about it. DH keeps tracks of scores, but we don't watch. We're too busy, and don't care much. #1 used to love to watch, but he knows the players are acting like jerks and disrespecting the country, so he doesn't even ask anymore. It's not fun anymore.

I am really suprised that this may be the straw that broke the camels back, so to speak. Players, not just with the NFL, are glorified. Even those that are wife beaters, drug overdoses, murderers, domestic violence. And yet, kneeling is the one that everyone is so outraged by? Kids look up to these players. Where was the outrage when Ray Rice or Josh Brown beat their SO? Drug suspensions were handed out only if they had to. Weapons charges? Yea, let's look the other way since he did not feel safe crossing the bridge.

People have their priorities wrong. I'd rather see a player peacefully stand for their beliefs than have a player who displays domestic violence in the NFL.

Well their audience has been dwindling down for a while and yes a few has been in trouble but it wasn't a majority of the players so why punish the majority of good players.

In response to the wife beating, etc. - of course that's not ok.  But those are crimes, and there are laws and procedures in place to handle that.  Employers have the right to hire criminals.  Those are not concerted efforts by numerous players then supported by the NFL itself and glorified by the media.  They have the right to protest, and say what they want - it isn't a crime to be handled by the legal system - the only real penalty possible is the reaction of the fans.

My issue is this -

These players are paid an exorbitant amount of money to play an unnecessary game in taxpayer subsidized stadiums. All the while, the police they are protesting struggle on restrictive budgets, get paid a pittance, and risk their lives for a society that protests them. Yes, occasionally, there is a bad apple in the police force. Just like there are bad apples in every walk of society. Want to talk about the football players that have committed crimes? But, on the whole, the police departments of this country struggle to train and retain qualified individuals on measly budgets, pay people who risk their lives less than the average plumber, and serve the public to the best of their ability. Their protest ignores all the GOOD public servants and offends most of America because of it.

And please don't forget the hundreds of officers working in those stadiums protecting those players while they are protesting.

And why they think protesting by taking a knee and disrespecting the people that selflessly serve this country is a better solution than using their time and money to make a difference is beyond me. You want to fight social injustice? Volunteer in the neighborhoods that need good role models, fund scholarships, make a difference by changing society rather than just disrespecting it. "Taking a knee" does nothing but make matters worse.

People are certainly aware now.

The conversation I had with four Philadelphia police officers (and former military too) on Monday night (after the start of the fame) was quite different that what I am hearing from most people.  They were okay with the kneeling as a silent protest to the racism.  They understand that it is not against the flag or their patriotism.  And yes, these current and former PPD are all different ranks.  One was a Captain in Internal Affairs, one is a detective, one is a patrol in a not nice area.  I forget what the fourth does.

The kneeling would have not gotten the attention it has if the president had not made a big deal out of it.

The kneeling has gotten attention way before Trump took office. It started with Koepernick a year or so ago. People were fed up with him then, too. But yeah Trump inserted himself into it and has to take the heat. But I believe there are a lot who support Trump and this country's honor over a bunch of guys who can run and catch a ball.

I just can't stand the hypocrisy of the NFL. The basically blackballed Tebow for praying to God on the field, they refused to let the Dallas cowboys put an emblem in remembrance of the police officers killed in the Dallas riots, and they refused to let the players where 9/11 remembrances on their shoes. But this is ok?

I don't think so.

This is more bigger than the players. This is about the management, too.

Yes the kneeling has been getting attention long before Trump became President and he didn't say anything that people weren't already thinking. Also I agree with Lawyerlady, the hypocrisy of the NFL black balling Tebow and refusing to let the Cowboys put on a emblem and 911 remberance, but kneeling during the anthem is okay? The fans had enough.

The kneel was getting attention but it was only a few players. Since Trump expressed his outrage, it is quickly spreading throughout the NFL and other events.
