Matthew Nicholson, 28, allegedly killed his mother during an argument over a broken video game headset

A 28-year-old is in custody after allegedly killing his mother in an argument over a broken video game headset.

Matthew Nicholson was playing video games in the bedroom of his home in Ceres, California, when he started fighting with his mother Lydia.

He allegedly shot his mother in the head then drove to a family member's house before being arrested hours later during a traffic stop, Fox 40 reported.

The fight started when Nicholson started yelling in his bedroom while he was playing video games, according to police.

When the 68-year-old mother went in to check on her son he allegedly started arguing with her and angrily broke his headset.

He then blamed his mother for getting him riled up and threatened to kill both his mother and father, Lydia and Loren, according to police.

Nicholson and his mother, Lydia (pictured with husband and father Loren), started fighting after she went to check on him in his room because he'd started yelling about a video game, according to police. He then angrily broke his headset and blamed his mother, before grabbing a gun and threatening to kill the parents, police said

'I understand that he would've killed the father too, but the gun jammed,' a family friend told Fox 40.

'The father grabbed the gun, emptied it.'

Loren immediately called police, around 9.48pm on Thursday night, as his son left the house and went to his sister's house in neighboring town Riverbank, according to Fox.

'It was the father calling to report that the son had shot his wife in the head,' police sergeant Greg Yotsuya told Fox.

Lydia was rushed to the hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Hours later he was pulled over at a traffic stop and immediately taken into custody.

'I will forever love you, my best friend, my chosen one, my always, my forever my protector, my motivation, my blessing, and now my guardian angel,' Nicholson's sister Autumn White wrote about their mother on Facebook.

'My heart is shattered and I promise your memory will live on forever in me, Dad, Cameron and Chris. You've earned your wings, fly and be free.'

Nicholson was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail Thursday night for homicide and is being held without bail.
