I think shutdowns are good at see where to cut the fat.

that never happens "cutting the fat". What does happen is a delay in services for us. My current contract runs through the end of this month and the new one had not been awarded as of Friday which means I face a possible lay off. Oh and everyone else on my team.

Would that just be a temporary lay off, IKWTDS, until the contract can be awarded?
While I am not an essential employee, there are many on my contracts who are and will continue working. My DH will be permitted to work on proposals but if there aren't any that require his oversight, then he will be taking leave. His company is focused on not incurring overhead costs. I will possibly put in a few hours Monday sending out furlough letters to contractors then I'll have to log off until further notice.
And yeah, there is no fat cut. It just doesn't work that way. Terminating a government employee is a long, drawn out process. It is done, I have seen it, but it's just not as easy as "You're Fired!"

It would be temporary. But the damage done to the battle rhythm of the work we perform will have repercussions. It is not just my Company but the Gov't as well since will not be able to show up for work. It may be a huge impact depending on how long this goes on.

If the government is shut down, that means the fat cats won't be getting paid . . . right? They'll have to sign up for unemployment, right?
hahahahaha Sorry, I couldn't help myself.
They will all get paid. No gov't employee has ever not gotten paid due to a shutdown. People wonder why the gov't isn't efficient. This is one big reason, the shut downs that is.

I'd love to see the fat cats in government,
especially those who have been there over
ten years, not get their paychecks until
the shut-down is over. "Oh, so sorry, the
'non-essential' people who cut your checks
have been put on furlough. You'll have to
wait until the military and retirees get their
checks before we can pay you. Also the
payments for Medicare and SSI." Put the
fat cats at the bottom of the list.
Oh, and the private health care coverage
they have? It shouldn't be able to pay out
for the entire time we're in "shut-down".
Let's make it as inconvenient as possible
for them.
What other "inconveniences" can we hold
them to?
No Senate barber shop?
No Senate cafeteria?
No official vehicles?
Remember a couple of years ago when the government put up barricades around the free standing monuments in Wash DC during the shutdown or threat of a shutdown? How ridiculous was that? I'm one of those workers affected by the furlough but because of where I work, we still have to go to work. We can't take vacation or sick time next week if the shutdown is still on. If you do you will be written up.
No matter what party is in office they always blame the other party.

And in 2013 you couldn't even pull your car over on a public road to view Mt Rushmore. All ordered by O.

Include their staffers in that and you will be amazed at how things will pass quickly.

Now it needs spring to get here so you can fill it with wildflowers!

I have to go in to work tomorrow. I really need some new tools and overtime is the only way I can get them. I would have worked today instead but I had a bunch of errands.
SS asked me if I've heard of a "pomski". So of course then I had to explain to him that's it's not a real breed, it's just people trying to pass off their mixed breeds as something fancy. Sigh. Pet peeve (haha get it)
