I have always thought of buying a place on a bay in NC, close to the ocean but safe distance for storms. I love the ocean. But my kids don't live there and I don't want to be traveling all the time. So thinking about lake front/pond front. I would like to be able to sail a small boat and paddle a kayak. The prices in areas I am looking at are some much less than where I live now so would be paying cash. What are your thoughts? Family or living near the ocean? Oh and this is not a passive aggressive question should someone be wondering.

Or, could you own a small place near the ocean or a lake that you stay in half of the year or something? I am sure there are many ways to consider and think about this? Also if you had a place, you might have more family in your lap than you can imagine! lol

So I am considering the lake location because of storms, most that will happen is lake affect snow. On the ocean, weather can be bad during hurricane season. Plus when I am older, the calm of a lake is probably more physically enjoyable.

What about those condos where you own it and can spend as much time there as you want, but when not there, the building manager takes care of it and it's rented out?
A lot of the resorts do that.
You get beach front living, a crap ton of amenities, someone else takes care of it, and you just enjoy it.
Then have a smaller place closer to family.
Split your time.

We're going to try to hang on to our house as long as we can, even though we would like to move further from the city after retirement. Neither of us had a "home" to go back to after we left, so thought it would be nice if the boys were able to experience that. Both our parents sold their homes shortly after we moved out.
A week or two timeshare on the beach and a lake house.
So trying to figure out the cost of this idea. Frankly I think buying a lake house and then going on vaca a couple times a year might be cheaper and no locked in costs of timeshares.

If I stay put for 10 years, that will be after DD is done with college plus a year. I am an older parent and will need to get on with the next chapter.

I like the idea of a timeshare just because everyone will know when there will be a family vacation every year. Then people plan around it instead of planning a trip around everyone's schedule.
We are older parents as well, which is why I think we will most likely end up moving. It would be hard for me to give up my pool though!
I don't care to swim anyplace where I cannot see what is in the water, beach or lake. I do and have, but I have to psyche myself up first. I just don't enjoy it as much as the pool or clear water. But I love going out on boats and pontoons. I am planning to try paddle boarding and parasailing on our upcoming trip to Jamaica. And snorkeling. I haven't done that since 1990.
Everyone I know who had timeshares dumped them after retirement. They weren't using them due to blackout dates or whatever and they found they were too expensive for something they couldn't use much.
I'm stuck where I am cause DH has no intention of ever moving. I love North Carolina, love Willington and emerald ilse, the mountains and Raleigh.
At one time both my kids lived there ( North Carolina )at the same time and if God forbid something happened to my husband I would sell my home and my part of the business and move there. Alas now that my son married, works for us and moved back here I'll probably stay here.
Ikwtd, living by a lake sound wonderful!

I personally would not buy a timeshare. First, what if you just get tired of going to the same place? Also what if the place isn't quite maintained up to snuff, what recourse do you have? They are very hard to get out of and can be more expensive than you anticipate from what i hear. But, i do not know that for sure because I have never really looked that hard into it.
I would not buy anything assuming that others will visit or spend time there. They may or may not. Life is very busy especially for young families with work, sports, etc. So, if you get something make sure it is something you are happy with whether it is used to the level you wish it was or not.

I wouldn't mind having a condo on the gulf, but I would not to rent it out and know I wouldn't get down there often enough. My parents had a mountain house an hour from them, and since they were paying utilities on it, felt obligated to go up every weekend. I went a few times, but I was working two jobs at the time and spare time was limited. Once I moved, they felt it was more of a burden, so they sold it. They loved it at the time, but they didn't like feeling they had to go up every weekend.
Hey! Have you thought about an RV? Then you can just take your house anywhere you want to go.

If you are considering any type of "RV" or
motor home, be aware that you will always
want some sort of "local" transportation.
I.e., if you select a "pull behind" trailer, you
will be able to disconnect the tow vehicle
(usually some sort of pick-up) to go on any
side trips. However, if you select a motor
home that drives itself, you will need some
sort of vehicle that will take you to local
attractions, and drive you to shopping areas.
This could be as simple as bikes, or mopeds,
or motorcycles, or as elaborate as your own
car towed behind.
Another consideration will be laundry. Yes,
laundry! No matter how much you try, you
will always have laundry. Sheets, underwear,
clothing. Detergent, dryer sheets, quarters,
all of which mount up.
Whichever you choose, hope you have many
happy years where ever you are!
