So, I gave up shopping again for Lent.  Today, my Kohl's app on my phone sent me a message.  It misses me.  It said "Long time no see.  cry  Your Kohl's App misses you."

LOL.

I'd have to walk away from a relationship that needy.

I don't observe Lent.

I try not to eat meat on Friday, but truth be told, it usually makes its way in to my diet anyway.

I abstain from meat on Friday's and each year choose something to give up. This year, I gave up eating at Arby's. while this my seem like an odd choice, Arby's is the closest thing to the plant. We get food from there probably twice a week.

I don't observe lent, but I appreciate the reasons for those that do.

So found out something interesting tonight from my very Catholic mother. Sundays are excluded from Lent so any thing you give up you get a pass on for Sunday's. And 59 YO and older are exempt from Lent give ups.

Yes, both are true. And play a bigger part in the more strict regulations of Lent that call for full on fasting during times. I have always included Sundays, expect for when I have started a Lenten reading plan.  They only have 40 entries and if I do Sundays I would finish early.

Yes, if you are 59 or older, or 14 and younger, you don't have to abstain.

Also, if you are diabetic, or have a physical condition, that would put your health at risk, you don't have to abstain.

I never paid attention to the "Sunday Pass".

I gave it up for 40 days of Lent. So, I gave it up.

But the 40 day count does not include Sunday's otherwise the would be 44 or 45 days of Lent.  I just found it amusing that Mom is just telling us now.  My bro was happy he is off the hook for abstaining from something.

LL can go shopping tomorrow!  wink

So let me see if I'm understanding this.

Lent is about contrition, so you can gain forgiveness for sins, but you get a "pass" on Sundays, and if you are over 60, you don't have to observe Lent at all? So 60 and up don't need forgiveness, and Sundays are just free for alls, and you can do whatever?

No. I don't understand any of that.

LOL! Roger that!

IMHO, it kind of defeats the purpose.

I was never one, to cheat, on Sunday.

I think anyone who is abstaining during Lent, would probably feel the same as me.

Just guessing.smile

I agree on the Sunday thing, it would be similar to cheating.  My Bro and I got a charge how Mom was telling us this now.  Not what we were taught in CCD!

I always felt that the Sunday off thing didn't apply to the self imposed

That's why I don't worry too much about it.  DH is more strict than I am.  I figured it there were all these accommodations and exceptions, dispensations, etc., it must not be THAT important.  Personally, I think it's more important to just remember Jesus and his suffering, particularly during this time.

Yes, I know this, but I don't exempt for shopping.  It seems like cheating to just wait until Sunday to go crazy each week.

You don't observe on Sunday because it's the Lord's Day.  It is a day of joy and celebration - so you don't fast on that day.

Normally, lent is about fasting, and the elderly usually have more health issues, so they don't want them fasting. Fasting is not about putting yourself in danger.  And you don't need to fast to have forgiveness - God's grace gives us that - so it isn't about "needing" forgiveness or not.

You voluntarily give something up as a sacrifice in honor of God's sacrifice for us.  No one makes you do it.

Besides, we don't normally "fast" in the proper sense of the word. We usually give up one or two things. Fasting would mean living on very limited food for 40 days.
