Yesterday, while doing my weekly grocery shopping, I wheeled up to the check out line for one of my favorite cashiers (Luis). The lady in front of me turned and asked if she could help me unload my cart. I replied "Yes, and thank you! That's one of the things I love about south Texas - people are so willing to help!" She and her 10-12 year old son emptied my cart in about two minutes flat. I told her how nice it was to encounter youngsters who were so polite.
She left, and Luis started ringing my groceries up. After about 15-20 items, he turned and extended some currency to me. "This is from the lady in front of you". WHAT??? OMG! $50! I looked around, and she was nowhere to be seen. Why would she do this? And why me?
Well, I think I have the answer. Today in Church, we learned that the daughter of our Church Secretary just lost everything in an apartment fire. She is a full time student (learning to be a court reporter), and works a part time job at a veterinary clinic. Her apartment is a total loss. Her dog was in the apartment for the full time of the fire, suffering burns and smoke inhalation. After five tries, the volunteer fire department was finally able to locate him, and bring him out. He is now at the Emergency Vet Clinic (long term, and very expensive).
Fortunately, she had renter's insurance, but that takes quite a while to come through. Her immediate needs are furniture, and money for gas. Her job is an hour away from the apartment, and school is 45 minutes in the opposite direction. The apartment complex was able to get her an apartment in a sister complex, but she has to start all over again with furniture and furnishings.
The $50 the angel gave me will help in getting her between job and school.
I think I'm going to suggest to my friends at Church that we hold a "shower" for her!
Vette ~
Do you have a list of what we put together for your sister? That would help me a lot in determining what is needed. Thanks!
