So, I'm so tired of all the stores doing these donation drives. Will you round up to the next dollar for this charity, or how about a $5 donation to this charity? And when you say no, it makes you feel bad.
I'm choosy about my charities. I like to give to small charities that makes a big impact on the community they are in. The only big charity I give to is St. Jude's b/c they do such amazing work and provide medical treatment to children for free.
Publix is doing March of Dimes. March of Dimes consistency scores very low on Charity Navigator and I don't give to them. I find it ironic that Publix won't allow any organizations to set up outside their doors so as not to harass customers coming in, but they have no problem doing it themselves.
Am I being crocthety?

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
No you are not being crotchety. I am tired of it as well. What really burns my butt is these same business get tons of PR then they give the money to the charity when all they did was collect it from customers. I no longer feel bad saying NO.

Thankfully, of the two grocery stores I frequent, only one does any kind of donation thing.
Food Lion has boxes of food you can purchase for the local food bank. They don't ask, the boxes sit at the register and you add it if you like.
Food City and Food Lion do Christmas cards for soldiers. The card sits on the little table at the register and you sign it if you want.
We had to do the "would you like to donate" dance at almost every restaurant I've worked at. If we didnt, we got threatened with everything from extra cleaning duties to withholding pay.
Yeah, that's illegal, but most kids don't know that.

I'm the same way. We have a handful of charities that we give monthly donations to. One is very very close to my heart so we give a bit more to that one...
