FS ~
Pleeeeeeease send some of your rain this
way! We really need it in the next two
weeks. Just enough to help the watermelons.
Too much, and they won't be sweet; not
enough, and they'll wither on the vine.
DD's chorus concert was awesome. She looked so umm, grown up. Anyway, up far later than usual but we only just got home so I need to decompress before I go to bed. Plus I worked 12 hours today. Yeah I deserve a break.
Watermelon! YUMMM, I will do a rain dance!

Momala, any tips on picking a good watermelon, when I go to Kroger?
I like the seedless ones.
And, I wish I could get some of yours, but it's quite a drive.

I would be ever so happy to send you all the rain for the remainder of Spring / Summer! I've had enough for this year already. I know my powers are not that great so I'll join IKWTDS in her rain dance and hopefully between the two of us, you'll get just the right amount for your melons.
It was starting to look like a jungle out there, but with all the rain, no way to mow it sooner.
All the rain has moved the ants inside.
Teeny tiny little piss ants.
More rain tomorrow.

Field spot - look at the pale patch on the bottom of the melon - where it sat on the soil. White is good, yellow is better, and gold is best.
Webbing - that slight "imperfection" on the rind of the melon, sort of rough, and pale tan or beige. The more of it there is, the more the blossom was pollinated, and the sweeter the melon will be.
Size - bigger is not always better. The bins in the supermarket will typically have all one variety of melon (Charleston Gray, Jubilee, Black Diamond, etc.). Look for a medium size one.
Gender - yes, melons have gender. Long, slender ones are male, and are very juicy. Shorter, round ones are female, and are sweeter.
Stem - a fresh green stem tells you that the melon was picked too early. Look for a stem that appears dry and withered.
BTW, "thumping" will not tell you if a melon is ripe, or sweet, just how much rain it got in the last week before it was picked.
Hope this helps.

My uncle married a woman whose family owns a very large watermelon farm.
Every year she would bring back a car full of the rejects.
And every year she got pulled over because the car was so weighted down, police would think it was full of drugs.
She'd open the car up, show it was just watermelons, and they'd let her go.
Often, she gave the officer a couple, too.
