Yup, everyone is digging out from the blizzard. We ended up with 8+ inches, drifts are very deep and long. A neighbor (bless his soul) used his snow blower to clear all the neighborhood sidewalks. Now the guys with the big tractors are coming in to clear the driveways. We have a 40 foot long, 4 foot deep drift in our driveway, so we are stuck until someone clears it out. Gotta love small town friends for helping everyone. Kids are out shoveling as well.
DD plans to come home this afternoon. Most of the roads are snow packed yet. No travel advised until later today.
We are going to a card party tonight. Everyone is bring food and munchies. It will be a good time. Celebrating a couples 41st wedding anniversary.
Hope everyone has a great day!

The rain has stopped for about an hour or so, but it's will start again.

We went to Benihana last night to celebrate DH's (his is earlier in the month) and DS' birthdays. DS enjoyed watching the chef and picked up on using the chopsticks pretty good. He did take a fork but didn't use it. He loved the hibachi rice. He got offended that a piece of his chicken dropped in the mustard sauce (he's not a mustard person) so I offered to trade him one of my pieces of chicken for the one that fell in the sauce. He liked that. He didn't care for the ginger dressing on the salad but happily ate the cherry tomatoes once the dressing was wiped off. He didn't care for the onion soup either but he did try it. He ultimately decided it was ok but not his thing.
Part of me wants to tuck one of those fast food sized containers of ranch in my purse for him the next time we go because he loves salad but I don't want him to grow a sense of entitlement in regards to restaurant menus. But, I also don't blame him for not caring for the ginger dressing. DH and I like it but it is a rather strong flavor for young kids.
We usually ask for the dressing on the side no matter where we go. #1 likes italian dressing but #2 doesn't like anything. There was a time when #1 would not eat it with dressing, too. I read somewhere that children develop taste buds until they are 2 and then aren't usually willing to try new things until they are about 10. That has held very true for my boys as they are very good at trying new things now. #1 is better but #2 is improving.
Onion soup, or miso soup? Both my boys love it but didn't really try it until they were 8 (#2) and 10 (#1). I keep a container of white miso in the refrigerator. I make my own soup sometimes, especially if someone is on antibiotics because it can provide the same "good bacteria" as yogurt but neither (nor myself) will eat yogurt but we'll drink the soup.
Neither care for the ginger dressing either. I prefer the sesame dressing but not many places use it. Sometimes I can find it in the Asian markets around here. I don't think dressing preferences=entitlement issues. There are dressings I refuse to eat (bleu cheese, Roquefort, etc.)
I agree with FNW. Taste preferences develop with age, and is not an entitlement issue. That's like expecting a three year old to love spicy foods because you like spicy foods. That's not the way it works with kids. Don't feel bad, my DS just figure that one out with his four year old, lol.
In other news, we are dug out!!
Sending oldest DGS to dig out another neighbor here in a bit.

I agree about the dressing, I am not a fan of ginger dressing.
I always ask for dressing on the side, no matter what it is.
I do that with all sauces and gravies, too.
I've realized I don't eat as much of it that way.

They call it Benihana onion soup. It's a medium brown broth with green onions and onions similar to the french-fried onions from the can.
Re entitlement issues - I didn't mean preferences. I meant expecting to always have his preferred items available at restaurants. I don't want him to have a hissy if the restaurant chooses to not have ranch.
For me, it's iced tea. I don't drink soda and restaurant lemonade is often too sweet for me. The tap water in my area sucks. So, I end up either having to deal with the nasty tap water or drink something I just don't like so I can have a beverage if the restaurant doesn't have iced tea.
I don't think that it is bad to carry a few packets of something that makes food better. I mean, if you can't enjoy the dressing at a place and have a little thing of ranch with you, go for it. Bringing your own drinks though, that's a bit of an issue. Unless you are willing to pay corkage.
He's still young. Do whatever it takes to enjoy your meal out. As long as he is introduced to a variety of food at home, he will be fine when he gets older and is more experimental. But I understand what you are concerned about.
I love that he does eat a variety of food. He has a pretty wide palate for a 5 year old. He asks for salads a lot. Can't go Olive Garden without him inhaling most of the bowl of salad himself. He loves popcorn shrimp. He liked the shrimp at Benihana too. He's not much of a fan of red meat, I've noticed.
Tig - No corkage fee for iced tea but it's rare that I come across a restaurant that doesn't have it. The pizza buffet we did DS' party at doesn't but they don't care if people bring their own beverages so I pay for a drink (they say I don't need to but I feel dirty otherwise) and bring a jug of tea when we go there.
I don't think it's a problem to carry a pack or two of condiments.
And you could take a tea bag, ask for hot water.

Paying for a drink when you bring your own is corkage. Regardless of if it's demanded or not.
Anyways - it just went from torrential rain to torrential snow and back to torrential rain in the last hour. I think I've invented a new slogan for this city:
Welcome to Vancouver. You're wet, but at least you're not freezing.

I'm only familiar with corkage being used in regards to wine.
That particular restaurant has said it's not necessary for me to buy a drink if I bring tea for myself. Buying one is a me thing. Just the way my conscience works.
Finally renewed my license today. It expires Monday. Planned to go tomorrow morning or Monday, but luckily at 4:00 today, I decided to check and see what time they were closing on Monday for New Year's. CLOSED. Tomorrow until Wednesday. I had to rush out of the office, go home and get all the paperwork together for the new license requirements, and then get there before 6 to renew it. Shockingly, I only waited 5 minutes.

You could have waited until after the new year.
They don't make an issue out of it.
I drove with an expired license for over a year before I realized it.
They didn't bat an eye about it.

The police wait outside of our licensing/insurance place. They check the cars that pull up and ticket them for driving without insurance or license. It doesn't matter that you're in there buying it. It just matters that you got there without it.
I accidentally let my license expire and they made me retake the written test AND the road test. Taught me a huge lesson!
Sometimes, I think the tests should be mandatory after so many years, say at age 50 and 70, 80 even.
But just because you didn't notice it had expired? That seems harsh.
I mean, how often do you even think about it?

Not with the Real ID licenses which is what LL is referring to. If your license is expired even by one day then you have to apply for a new license and once you receive that one then you have to re apply for the Real ID. The States cannot change that regulation since Real ID is Federally regulated.

SC is finally converting to real ID. I'm not due to renew for a few years but they are allowing early renewal. I'm going to do it so I don't have to fly with my passport.

That's pretty hard core
