Okay, well, I haven't actually bought a new car but I am thinking about it. My car is almost paid off. And don't get me wrong, I LOVE my car, like more than life, it is my precious baby. But the rotary engine is so finicky, and over the past couple years everything about the car has become such a hassle.
If I do get a new one I will hang onto mine, even if it just sits around. I wouldn't get a worthwhile trade in price anyway at this point

IMHO letting a car sit around and continuing to pay insurance, taxes and such on it is costly in the long run. Just trade it in. Regardless of what you get for it it will stop the bleed of cash of the costs to keep it.
I think you should check out the Ford Focus hatchbacks. DS has one and it is a nice car that is economical on gas.

As for owning a car I rarely drive, my ex and I used to have a truck like that, and we got an insurance package on it where if we needed to drive it we would just call up our insurance agent and he would activate short term insurance. So I would do something like that.
And I could never, never, ever ever own a Ford. First of all it would bring my DH WAY too much satisfaction (he's a Ford guy) I would never hear the end of it!

I'm resting today. I have a little cold. I'm starting a 6 week challenge at my gym tomorrow. The challenge includes 3 personal training sessions a week and one group session with the others in the challenge. Hopefully I'll be ok tomorrow.

new Ford Focus.

July of 2017, and it now has 40,000
trouble-free miles on it, and I'm
getting between 35 and 40 mpg. It
has plenty of get-up-and-go, and
handles well on wet roads.
