If you are impacted by the shutdown - call your creditors, they are helping.  As an example -

Bank of America is waiving mortgage payments for up to 3 months, and car payments for up to 2 months, plus waiving overdraft charges, and increasing credit lines on credit cards while waiving fees.

The American Express homepage says to call if you are affected by the shutdown.

Yes, and there are a ton of restaurants and groups holding free dinners for those affected.

What gets me, is they are requiring proof of government employment. Documentation. And some of these same people/groups have no problem letting in undocumented aliens.

 Screams double standard, doesn't it.

Ok all the restaurants offering free food, do they not get that these people, except for contractors, are going to get paid? People may need loans, and perhaps no interest loans, but they are going to get paid. Also the # of people affected are far less than other shutdowns (not that takes the hurt away from those affected). Perhaps Chucky and Pelosi need to refund the the program they passed under O and that is to fund a better border wall/security instead of being pissants.

But they don't have money now.  It's nice.

I know that. And it is nice of people to help.

I don't think the no interest loans and passes on rent payments and mortgage payments would be given if they weren't going to get paid. They know the government employees are good for it and that they will see their money.

If they're going to get paid in the end why not just pay them now? Why make the employees go without when it's just going to be all retroactively paid in the end?

The budgeting process doesn't work that way.  The people out of work have jobs with certain agencies and those agencies have no budget yet so they employees cannot be paid since our laws don't allow gov't agencies to overrun budgets.

Got it.  So once the government re-opens the budgets will be released and the employees will get paid retroactively because the wages from that time will be included in the budgets.

And, if this continues, a good number of these workers could find themselves permanently unemployed.

No, they find themselves looking for a new job, and there are plenty out there for them.  However if they do that, they effectively resign and so probably won't be eligible for back pay.

Do contractors usually provide back pay for their workers after end of furlough, even though they can't bill the government for time not worked?  I ask because I had a contractor try to bill us because they were "willing" to work but couldn't because of a shutdown.

I was saying that there is a point in which lay offs happen after a shutdown goes on for a certain amount of time.

Can they get unemployment, or will that stop any back pay?

What about those who depend on food stamps other programs? I’m not worried about those whom can work, but those who can’t

No, contractors do not get back pay.  Typically they will be moved to other ongoing contracts where positions are available.  If not enough open positions they can apply for unemployment.

Here the people got their food stamps for Feb already. They were told to be careful since they won't get more till March. I bet the food banks will be drained mid Feb.
