So, it's Ash Wednesday. Are you giving anything up for lent?
I have, for the past 2 years, given up shopping. But this year, I'm not really shopping as much. So, I'm going to give up Mexican cokes, since I love them so much.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Lent, a reminder of the sacrifice and suffering of God's Son for us. No where in the Bible does it say we have to sacrifice during Lent. There is nothing we can do to save ourselves, that is done by God through grace alone.
We do attend weekly Lentin services. Our church also does a supper before services. Tonight the youth group serves. This is their big fund raising time of year. I think they signed up for 3 meals.

Sunshine two days in a row for us. That will end tonight with another dump of snow. More coming this weekend. Hope we avoid the rain/ice mix before the predicted 6 more inches on Saturday. We may have over a foot of new snow before the two storms are over. Oh joy..
Nothing new here otherwise. Staying warm is my goal in life.

Faith isn't something that keeps bad things from happening. Faith is what helps us get through bad things when they do happen.
Shopping for myself. I actually started this 2 months ago as a means to get my financial house in order. And after purging clothes and such i took a good hard look at the waste. IvI' done great. If I keep it going my home equity loan will be paid. And I will only shop afterwards for when I need something or if I have to buy a gift.

I have to agree. Eating only fish on Friday falls under the same manipulation. It is not biblical.

I have to agree. Eating only fish on Friday falls under the same manipulation. It is not biblical.
That was due to economic hardship with the fishermen at the time. I could live off seafood.

It used to be a battle line in the Irish Catholic house. Painful. And the QM has anniversary mass every year for my fathers. Dead 25+ years. Really? Its her holiday.

I don't feel guilty. But 40 days is a great duration to break habits and form new good ones.

My DH refrains from eating meat on Friday and AW during Lent. I'll try to serve fish Friday, for him and because it's healthy for us. But I eat whatever I please for lunch. I really don't pay attention. And give up something? Does exercise count?
Looks like we, my sons and I, are going out to dinner.
Not sure where yet, but I won't be cooking it nor cleaning it up, so, YAY!
I grew up pentecostal, so lent was never even mentioned.
It was all about the crucifixion and resurrection.
I do miss the way everyone dressed up Easter Sunday, though.
Beautiful dresses, Easter hats, gloves, and new, white shoes for the women and girls.
New suits and shoes for the men and boys.
And on Easter Sunday, was the kids parade. All the kids, 12 and under, got to walk up one side of the church, across the stage, and down the other.
Then, they stayed in for the main service, instead of the regular children's church. After the service, everyone went to one of the church member's farm, Brother Hammontree, and there were acres and acres of fields for hunting eggs.
Into the thousands of eggs. Real ones, mostly.
Then it was picnic time.
It was a full day of worship, fun, and fellowship.

I’m southern Baptist, so I don’t observe lent. My daughter use to. I tried once but not very good at it. I don’t think it hurts to abstain from material things so we can focus more on my relationship with the Lord. I didn’t do a very good job last time I tried it.

I have found that the daily reminder to remember God's sacrifice is good for my faith. Sometimes, in the rat race of life, keeping him at the forefront is overlooked.

No, I do not give up anything for Lent, either. But it is a shock to me that it is already Ash Wednesday... Where does the time go?
Whenever I hear Ash Wednesday I remember when I was in Primary School and the Catholic kids in my class (all 3 of them) would come with ashes on their forehead.
I never even knew what ash Wednesday was on the calendar.
I never saw it on anyone's forehead until I was an adult.
This is a Baptist/Methodist/Pentecostal area.
We have more faiths now.
But they are still not mainstream.
