Its not just about affordability, but for animals it's quality of life. Once an animal is sick it's only a matter of time anyway.
For me, it is absolutely about affordability.
If they are that sick, I can't afford to care for them properly, then their quality of life would be gone, and I won't go to the poor house over an animal.
I have a cousin who recently announced her dog is now cancer free.
The dog was given to them 1 year ago, it's 14, and they now have 2 mortgages because of cancer treatments for a dog. The dog can't see, and the chemo ruined the dog's kidneys. Now they want to find it a kidney transplant.
I'd have put that dog down, peacefully, and went on with my life.
