Then you play school sports, oh well.

This is my point.  If you don't come from an affluent family you don't have the same opportunities at sports careers or scholarships.

I'm actually talking about school sports.  Even those get pricey and too time consuming.

Sorry - I was too, with the addition of hockey.  We only have school sports where I'm from.  But we have AAA, AA, A.  Although technically, the bigger the school the higher the rating because of the larger pool of players.  These other things are in addition to school sports?  Travel teams and such?  All of our teams traveled.

Yes.  School teams have away games, but it is not the same as travel teams that play all over.

People do what they want to do. Seems most parents manage to buy their kids all kinds of things if they choose too.

That's kind of the point of the article.  LESS people are choosing to do so because of how expensive it is.  And I think, because of the ridiculous time commitment.

I mean, my child would not be going to games on Sunday.  Period.  And that would preclude her from a lot of team sports right now.

I agree that the time committment is ridiculous for some youth sports. Especially very young kids. And, the expense often comes in because parents and coaches can't simply be happy with a tshirt league. Like get some kids together and play local kids wearing pinnies or tshirt. Nope, gotta have a CONCESSION STAND, cuz omg nobody can spend an hour watching kids play something without being able to eat cheese fries. Then, well, we need fancy uniforms. And, every kid needs certain equipment. And, oh, let's go play away games at other towns and set up playoffs, and on and on .

I mean what needs to happen is the parents of athletic kids need to rally to help change this.

As ya'll know, I live across the road from a huge rec department.

16 baseball/softball fields.
8 soccer fields.
2 football fields.
6 volleyball fields.
4 basketball courts, 2 inside, 2 outside.
And 20 miles of walking/running trails.

There are games ranging from ages of 4, up to Senior leagues.

I have seen all the fields full during tournaments. It becomes a village on weekends.

Tents, tables with merchandise, classes, there is even a couple daycare areas.

Sports are big money.

I remember when boys in the neighborhood would gather at the elementary ball field and play against other neighborhoods boys on their own and just play ball. They were very serious and had a lot of fun. If you ever watched sandlot that was how it was then.

We literally created our own neighborhood "league". We had teams and we kept individual stats for wiffle ball. We used to play on the asphalt court playground behind the school. A "home run" was when the ball hit the second floor 3rd floor of the brick school. Sometimes we hit the ball up on the roof, lol. My childhood was a blast. We had a huge group of kids and I lived in a small town and we literally explored the entire town. Every alley, every creek, etc. No stone unturned.

We played kickball, or broomball.

There was only ever about 10 of us at one time, so we made do.

I grew up on a dead end street and all the kids will play kickball in the street.

Hell, Canadians get stranded on a mountain highway because the ice is too thick or because some semi lost control on it and they pull out their hockey gear and start playing. (yes, Canadians seem to always have skates,a puck and a stick just in case ... idk why. I only have a paddle board, which I guess I could pull out if the stranded-ness is in the summer near a lake.)

I grew up beside it middle school. We played on that field.

Kickball was the cheapest game to play, beside kick the rocks.

I would love to see Kickball come back into vogue again! That was fun.  Easy game, everyone can play.  However, did you play where you threw the ball at the person to hit them or did you have to throw it to the base to get them out?   I mean, i guess we can't whap a ball at anyone's head nowadays, lol.  We used to whip that red rubber ball right at the runner!

We just hit each other with it.

But the rule was not above the shoulders.

A couple of us had glasses.

Nobody wanted the wrath from breaking glasses.

The only thing about that, that is not always that easy to do. There are kids who are not good throwers, etc, someone WILL get hit in face regardless, intentional or not.

However, i suggested kickball as an intramural extracurricular. Something that could be played after school,as a fun pick up kind of league. I think that would be fun!

True. But there was no intentional gunning for the face, either.
