Trudy ~
If you really want a tree,
decorate it with all things
orange - as in the real
fruit, not the color !
Cats are repelled by
scent of orange, and
won't go near it.

Try it out on something
you know Mittens likes
to play with, and see
how she avoids it.

Like GG's chair? Ugh. Just attacks it all day!

The peel contains the most
oils, so use it wherever you
can - especially where you
don't want Mittens to go,
such as GG's chair! Wrap
the peels in netting or a
piece of cheesecloth.

If Mittens is destroying the
chair, tape a couple of
sheets of aluminum foil
on the corners. Cats
generally avoid "crinkly"
things.

Thanks. It's two different trees. The one with more red is the MIL tree. Most of the ornaments were inherited from her so we put it up in her honor. The other one is my millennial tree. It has a lot of snowflakes on it.

I never use real trees. We did, once, when I was a kid.

It dried out, made a huge mess, we watered it twice daily, but still dried out. Needles were everywhere.

It just wasn't worth it.

To help your live tree keep its
needles, bounce it on the ground
before you buy it. If a lot of
needles fall off, don't take that
one.

Once you get it home, fill a pail
with tepid water, and stir in 6-8
packets of floral powder that you
get from a florist for fresh flowers.
Cut about 2" off the bottom of the
tree, and IMMEDIATELY immerse
it in the water. If you can keep
it outdoors, in a protected area
where it doesn't get sun or wind,
that is the best until you start
to decorate it.

Make sure it has a minimum of
one gallon of water at all times.
Use more of the floral powder in
the container.

Now here's my secret. With the
lights turned off, spray your tree
on all sides with clear water every
day. Trees are used to being rained
on, so you want to keep them in
the same atmosphere. Use about
a pint of spray every day.

See. At the time, we had a wood burning stove heater. We had to keep a pot of water on it 24/7 or the house would get so dry, and our noses would bleed.

I have, right now, 15 trees, of varying sizes, shapes, and colors. I use them all, depending on the look I'm going for.

Can't do that with live trees.

I don't want the work of a live tree.

But you cannot beat the smell of a live tree; it just permeates the whole house. Still they are a lot of work.

I like the smell of live trees but hate the mess and upkeep. When I had a lot of pines on the property, I'd cut branches and use them in and around the house. They never offered much scent, but they were pretty. Now I have a ton of holly at my disposal. Not sure what to do with it though. My mom and MIL were great at using the naturals

I'm not a fan of the pine smell. It reminds me of all those weekends cutting wood.

FNW use the holly as accents in you garland.

But anytime you work with natural clippings, wear gloves.

I used to make fresh wreaths, and I had a terrible reaction to the Sap. I learned early to use gloves.

My mother used to make table centerpieces with pine and holly. She would lay waxed paper underneath so you couldn't see it.

Under holly trees or bushes? I like adventure as much as anyone, but that'd just be painful.

Yes. It keeps the clippings from weeping onto you furniture and linens.

I have a large magnolia tree, I want to use it to bulk up garland, but I never have.

Maybe next year.

Growing up, our house had huge holly bushes under every window, and on each side of both doors.

They were gorgeous, but playing outside barefoot was a big no-no.

Later the joke was "nobody gonna sneak out protection".

My parents used to plant pyracantha under their windows for their thorns. They thought it would be a burglar deterrent. When our house was broken into, they went in through the window over the pyracantha so it didn't work.

Back in Staten Island, we had
huge holly bushes in front of
the front porch, and I used
cuttings from it every year to
make wreaths and table
decorations. I miss those
bushes. Holly just doesn't
grow in south Texas.

My grandfather used to breed boston terriers. He kept his animals outside always, even when he lived near Lake Tahoe. He build a dog house under his deck and used a heat lamp in it to keep the dogs warm.

Didn't do a real tree this year, With my surgery and not knowing what the final result will be we kept it simple. I bought this spiral tree the year I took DD to Disney for a week right after Christmas. I really like it and it works for us.
