My ENT called me this week and said the hospital is going to open up to do elective surgery again starting May 1st. He said I will be his first case. However, our hospital buys all their PPE (everything from masks to gloves to gowns) from China so right now they're not buying anything from there and very short on PPE. He said when they get enough PPE they will open back up for normal business.

And WHY are we buying all our crap from China? Surely someone in the USA makes PPE.

That's today, I think.

If it ever warms up and clears up enough, we will host a movie night. We have a projector and do it once a year. I'm sure we can sit far enough apart to watch it together.

Lots of other production facilities are making them now.  3M Canada has stopped making a lot of their products and are producting PPE instead.  Are they doing that in the US?

We used to get a lot of medical supplies made in Puerto Rico but the factories were destroyed in the past few hurricanes. We had to switch a lot of stuff. I’m guessing China has the lowest prices. It’s a shame.

I honestly have no idea.  And SB it probably IS the lowest price.  When will we learn that saving three cents is not necessarily a good thing?

Agreed NJN. I think things will change. I posted a while ago how we had a huge sterile pack recall. The sterile packs contain all the disposable items for surgery such as gowns, drapes and towels. It was a huge international mess. All because issues with a plant in China. Our main supplier stopped doing business with that particular plant. This all happened just before covid became big in the US. I’m wondering if the recall was partially due to it over there.

The regulations, taxes, and FDA are why everything is from other countries now.

It is due to that which meant we were unable to restock quickly.  Yeah not just the US but many other countries will move away from the cheap goods from China, actually it is already happening.

Taxes, aka tariffs have been dealt with but continued to monitored.  And yes, regulations driving the FDA approval/non approval are being revised.  Although Trump will  never get that credit.  He recognized this BS decades ago and for 3.5 years has been looking to improve those items.

I think it has become clear that we need manufacturing in the US. We need to make our own medical supplies. Do we really want to be beholden to other countries when it all hits the fan? Trump is right and has been right all along. These things need to come back to the US. And we need to manage the borders and not allow it to be a sieve.

As for the "new normal", I do not think we are going to go about wearing masks for long. I just don't see Americans doing that for the long term. And, yes, we got knocked down for awhile but does that mean we have to change everything about our way of life and culture? Are we really not going to have sports , concerts and events. Are we going to pull seats out of airplanes and really increase the costs to travel? I don't know, i guess that remains to be seen.

And people are super selfish. They're not going to allow for change that makes life less fun for them.

You can laugh if you want. My state locked down. People are home. When out, people are wearing masks to get groceries. But, again, that is my state. We all complied with the Gov even though I don't like him, I did as we were instructed and so did everyone I know. But, yeah , mocking the efforts of Americans seems to be a thing you do.

 Wasn't mocking Americans.  biggrin

Everyone is being nice and compliant right now, but the minute the all clear is given, everything will go back to the way it was.

I don't think so. I think people will distance. At least in my area. There is an aura of fear so thick you can cut it with a knife. Even when lining up to go in a grocery store, people automatically put 6 feet in between without using any taped off lines.

I don't see anyone saying to fling the doors open as Tig suggests.

I really don't think I'll live long enough to see things, the way they were, before this damn virus.

I know the news changes every day. But, the thought that if you had it...offers no immunity?

That's a sobering thought. And, that's what the WHO is reporting.cry

Who knows? That report might change, tomorrow.

We need to ride this out.

I think, we need to be able to make the best decisions that we can, for ourselves, and our loved ones.

We can't stay home, forever. People need to get back to work. As safely, as possible.

And folks, will have to look at their risk factor, and decide...if going to a movie, or bowling, or whatever...is worth it.

Older people, who have health issues, will probably want to avoid big gatherings.

Younger ones, will be more willing to get out there. I hope they take steps, to be safe. And keep their older family member safe.

Nothing is going back to normal, anytime soon.

Just my best guess.

Please don't throw rocks, it's just my opinion.cry

 This

And, that might be true.

I'm sure we have seen it, in ways. So far, folks are keeping a respectful distance. It's not that hard to do.

Over the long haul....as people see their loved ones die, from this. And with the news changing, every day.

Maybe, people will be more careful.

And, maybe we can get back to work, in a safe manner.

Fingers crossed!smile
