Good morning momala, I bet your watermelons are delicious, good morning to all the geeks. Had no1 grandson spend the night last night, we roasted hot dogs and made s’mores and he wrestled with grandpa.
Today is the anniversary of D-Day, my uncle was one of those who stormed the shore.
Look for the "field spot" - that
yellow area where the melon
sat on the ground. Cream color
is ok, but yellow/gold is best.
Look for "webbing" anywhere
on the skin. It means that the
flower was pollinated multiple
times, which makes a sweeter
melon.
Look at the stem. If it is green,
pass it up. Brown, shriveled is
good - it means the melon was
on the vine until it was fully
ripe. No stem? Look for brown
where the stem used to be.
My ex aunt in law used to bring watermelons home from her families plantation in south Georgia. She always got pulled over at least once coming home, because of how low the trunk sat under the weight of the melons.

A cantaloupe should SMELL
like cantaloupe, at the stem
end. That end should have
a little bit of "give" to it,
but not be really soft.
Look for a melon that has
an even "netting" all over
it, with a consistent, dark
color. It should also be
heavy for its size. Avoid
ones that have a white
netting.
