I want to give her something special. Any ideas?

She isn't a big jewelry person, but I was thinking a bracelet.

Something borrowed? Something blue? A penny in her shoe?

 I was wondering that, too.

I'm not sure I'd go with a bracelet. (I'm not big on jewelry either. And a bracelet is my least favorite piece of jewelry to wear. But that's just me.)

A beautiful picture frame would be nice. She could put a wedding photo in it.

She paints, models clay.

I want something personal.

But I was also thinking something like a serving platter of something like that.

We got a silver platter from MIL. But it was engraved as an anniversary gift to DH's grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary. So when we opened it, it was...weird.

DH's parents were divorced and apparently she took the platter which belonged to DH's father. (It was his parents' anniversary gift that he and his sister bought for them). DH's father never knew what happened to that platter...assumed his sister got it when their parents died...until our wedding day. So you can imagine the shock for all of us.

One of my favorite wedding gifts
was a LARGE wooden serving
platter, suitable for a 24 pound
turkey, or a large standing rib
roast. The special feature was
that it was slightly tilted, with 2
knobby feet on one side, and a
deep well to catch any juices. I
think it came from Williams
Sonoma.

Well, serving platters don't really scream personal, to me.

Unless it's engraved with something meaningful, to the couple.

And, most of the younger crowd, don't seem to use them anymore. (Just going by Conor, and his friends. They are very casual, when entertaining.) Not that they have been able to do  much entertaining, lately.

Does she love the holidays, as much as you do?

A Manger scene, might be nice. They could put it up every Christmas. (I let Jessi go through all my Christmas stuff, after she and Conor got married. Young couples don't have much of that. So they took a bunch of mine. I'm too old to put it all up, anymore.)wink

Hmmm...I guess I will ponder, some more.

I'm sure our Geeks will toss out more ideas, too.smile

If she is religious, why not start her on a nice rustic manger display, nothing large but one pieces can be added to later.

I am making a cook book for them, family recipes.

But I want something that says "I'm blessed you are my daughter" kind of thing.

Lily, I beautiful cross, that they could hang on a wall?

Along with some Christmas decorations.

You would have a theme going. And, I think she would love it.

New couples, just starting out, don't have much of that.

It would be personal, and appreciated. I think.smile

Still pondering...

I've seen several throw pillows with sayings about DIL's. Blessed you are my DIL kind of thing. Or a t-shirt with something printed on it? I got my SIL a t-shirt that says I have an awesome MIL and yes she bought this shirt for me. I've seen a lot of cute designs though. How about an early wedding present? Pillowcases that say Mr. and Mrs.? Do they have pets? I can think of a lot of ideas if they do.

I like the idea of a nice frame, perhaps a digital frame with personalization on it. You can always buy a frame, load the SMS card up with pics of your son and find some nice classy things to glue on to the frame, such as her initials.

I still have my $10 crockpot that was a wedding shower gift from one of my mom's friends.  It's a standard size one and it hasn't failed me in 30+yrs!

Yes. Kind of why I was thinking a platter. Maybe not to use so much as just have. But that doesn't seem personal enough.

Oh, we got off track.

Back to the topic, at hand.

I love the cookbook idea, Lily.

What a nice way, to pass down some family favorites.smile

Christmas decorations, a cross, picture frames.

All seem personal, and special.

Maybe, we can think of some more.smile

Let's put our thinking caps on...

How about a hand-made (by you)
Christmas ornament? Lots of lace
around the top, and whatever you
want for the rest of it, but with a
personalized sentiment from you.
"I'm blessed to have you as my
daughter-in-love". It would be
just for her, to let her know how
much she means to you.

When I inherited my first husband's
6 children, the oldest had a birthday
just before we got married. I found
out that her favorite color was lilac,
so I got her a very good full slip,
with lots of well made lace. She
still uses it.

 Nice!

I bought Conor and Jessi, their first Christmas tree, and decorations.

Great minds, think alike!

How much time do we have, to toss out ideas?

The wedding is in September? If I remember correctly?

We should post ideas, in the next week, or so?

Just a guess. Let us know.smile

I love the cookbook idea, too. My former MIL gave me recipes but intentionally would omit an ingredient or two. Former SIL told me she didn't want it to be as good as hers. Former FIL watched her cook so he gave me the missing ingredients after she passed.

DH's mother wasn't a good cook when DH was growing up so there were no "favorites". She was an excellent cook in her latter years but DH moved out at 18 and never returned back. A couple of things she made for us I asked the recipe for and she gave them to me, in their entirety, LOL.

I think if there are some favorites that your son loves that would be a nice gesture. My grandmother gave my mother my father's favorites, and she still has them. And they are still his favorites. They've been married 60 years this September.

You'll make a nice MIL, lily.

 I've painted ornaments for years.

You could make her a wedding set of ornaments for her tree -

lovely tradition from Germany is the bride's tree. It is believed that a married couple's Christmas tree needs 12 specific ornaments for happiness in their life journey together. These ornaments are often given as a wedding gift or a Christmas gift for the newlyweds.

 The Ornaments' Symbolism

Each ornament symbolizes a different hope or blessing for the new couple. You can find a lovely bride's tree ornament collection on Amazon, or you can shop for each ornament individually. Around Christmas, many seasonal shops sell a large variety of ornaments and websites like Etsy and eBay are other great places to look for unique ornaments. If you plan to order online, make sure to start your shopping well before the holiday rush to avoid shipping delays.

    • Fish: A fish, symbolic of Jesus Christ, represents Christ's blessing, as well as fertility.
    • Teapot: Inviting a guest for tea is a nice way to demonstrate your hospitality.
    • Bird: A bird, more specifically, a dove represents the Holy Spirit. It symbolizes joy and happiness. If the bird is in a nest, then it represents confidence in the cottage or home.
    • Angel or church: This is a symbol of God's guidance.
    • Rabbit: A rabbit stands for hope and peace with nature.
    • Fruit basket: Like a cornucopia during Thanksgiving, a fruit basket represents generosity and plenty.
    • Heart: As you might expect, a heart is a symbol of true love and love in the home.
    • Pinecone: A pinecone, an evergreen symbol, represents fruitfulness, eternity, motherhood, and fertility.
    • Flower basket: A flower basket or bouquet symbolizes good wishes or beauty in the home.
    • Rose: The rose is a symbol of affection and the Virgin Mary. A yellow rose symbolizes faithfulness in marriage.
    • House: Pretty much self-explanatory, a house represents a family's shelter or protection.
Santa: Santa Claus is a symbol of goodwill, giving, and sharing.

Additional ornaments:

Glass carrots: Carrots were believed to bring the bride good luck in the kitchen.
  • Star: Like the star the led the Three Wise Men to Bethlehem, the star symbolizes guidance.
  • Boat: This is representative of a couple sailing across the waters of life, both rough and smooth.
  • Colored balls: The many colors symbolize the diversity of the world.
  • Paper chains or garlands: These strands are symbolic of how humans are all bound together.
  • Lights: In Christian tradition, candles are a symbol for Jesus and the light he brings to earth (and a couple) even in the darkest times.
  • Grape: Like the Communion wine that brings people together, grapes are a symbol of friendship.
  • Bell: A bell, usually wrung to mark a momentous time, represents joy and merriment.
